Cheers guys, not too shabby for FS9 I thought.

Will hopefully have a new system in February and finally be able to run FSX AND make it look half decent. :)

Great shots Iain and interesting to know that they're FS9 as well.
With the demise of MS support for XP soon, I'm also going to have to make a decision regarding replacing my pc.
At the moment I am entirely undecided what to do viz a viz going the whole hog and buying a new beefed up replacement or having to decide whether to go for P3D or FSX with all the cost of scenery and add on replacements with all the associated learning curves.Or I could stick with FS9 on a new pc.The other course is to say that I've gone as far as I want to with FS ,call it a day and save a shedload of dosh in the process.
At the moment the jury is out!
I'll be interested to know how you get on with your new machine. :) EricT

Hi Eric, at the moment I'm running FS9 on my laptop (HP Pavillion g6, 2010-ish) which is coping OK with most of FS9 (save for heavy clouds etc.) But it's time to put the old flightsim out to pasture and move on. My copy is so old it's starting to whiff...

I've trawled through forums to get an overview of the sort of PC that is required. Here are the specs I'm planning for the new desktop which goes over and above what people say is a 'good' system.

CPU: Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4820K (3.7GHz) 10MB Cache
Motherboard: ASUS® SABERTOOTH X79: SOCKET 2011, R.O.G
RAM: 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT)
Graphics: 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 650 - DVI, mHDMI, VGA - 3D Vision Ready
Hard drive: 1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)

It's a big investment but I'm hoping that this will make it somewhat future-proof. :worried:

Cheers

Eric,
there is of course another option that you did not list - why bother changing anything at this time ?

The end of support for XP simply means that the applications you use on the XP machine will stop being updated; some now, some in the near future. When XP support ends, all you have to do is stop connecting that machine to the Internet, since, eventually, whatever AV product you use will stop being updated with new definitions. There is NO reason why the machine itself should stop working.

Of course, if this is your only PC ... and, if it is, then you would not necessarily need to buy a new FS PC; any cheap(er) PC sufficient to your other needs would do, so that you could do a simple file transfer of anything related to FS9 between PCs. Personally, I use a simple netbook for all my daily tasks - although I connect it to my HDTV, I don't actually need to do that, and I can take it with me when I travel.

You may care to note that, according to some conspiracy theorists, m$ could sabotage the final Windows / m$ update(s) for XP so that PCs DO actually stop working. There is a school of thought that says that this happened with the final update for an earlier release of Windows - I can't remember whether it was ME or 95. This is why I actually have two netbooks - one for testing (either my own programs or updates for others) and the routine daily one. The only updates that go on the daily one without being tested are AV updates and m$ Office ones, since I don't have Office on the test netbook ...

Hope that helps,
Ro

Thanks for the helpful replies gents. I'm aware the keeping my pc and disconnecting from the internet is an option. We also. Have an iPad mini (which is what I'm using right now) , so I can still get online.
I'll probably do what I'm best at- spontaneous indecision!, and leave it to last minute to do something.
Regarding the pc build,Ben and others always recommend two HDs,one of which being a SSD.He'll probably be along soon to remind me why.ATB EricT

Super shots Iain , reminds me of my youth . Rarely saw the outside !......apart from when in the hold stacked in the middle ! The cockpit window shot is spot on , even to the ''pin'' ... Remove from upper back of window before evacuating .
Please keep up the top tips of 'pooter replacement , and wot to do when XP , xpires . It's very useful for this luddite ; if not others .
