Quick-ish sunday hop..

Post by DaveB »

Ok, ok.. I cracked and bought the JF/AH DC6  I'd a fair whack of points available so the end price was just over £11. To celebrate, I bought one of the expansion packs too (£9 a shot) :cpu:

A gentle descent into EHAM from EGPK :)

I quite like the DC6 and the model is fun to fly but there are errors and the soundset isn't what you'd call 'to die for' 8) The marketed as the DC6B and comes with a host of liveries including the 2011 British Eagle repaint.. G-APSA. Unfortunately, APSA is a DC6A but I can tolerate that. A quick shuftie under the wings shows none of the models have either over or underwing registrations. A bit shoddy really.. who the hell checks these things 8) The BU paint above comes as part of the cargo expansion. Can't remember what the reg is supposed to be but it's not the one in the aircraft.cfg.. N37568. You gotta laugh  As with the pax versions.. no wing registrations on the cargo models either.

I did the flight above using FSCommander which has a default DC6 setting. It suggested I take around 14000lbs for the trip so I did.. and landed with well over 10K lbs onboard.. maybe over 12k, can't remember now but whatever.. I was either being very easy on the levers, the model runs too lean or FSC is further out than a Lib-Dem backbencher  Everything else you see there is default FSX. I actually managed the flight without an OOM though it has to be said.. Scotland is one of the few places I can fly from to achieve this.

If ever Britsim is clawed back from the Russians.. I may see if Gary Jones did any suitable DC6 sounds. I think the ones used on the model were knicked off the JF/AH Connie and are less than pleasing :|

All in all.. not bad really. I wouldn't recommend you all go dashing out to get it unless you really want one though.. not unless you have a shed load of points making it cheap as chips ;)

Maybe they use a common wing texture for both side *-)

Cheers Simon :)

Hi Garry.. yes, that was my thought too. It begs the obvious question though doesn't it. If this were freeware, you'd wonder why it was so but on payware.. it's just plain idle :|

DG.. cheers me dears. I'll nip over and check em out

As an aside.. I found the 'included' PK (in a separate download from JF!) and the wings are not mirrored. However, they're not the same colour as those on G-APSA either so I copied the original L/Wing and added a reg  . Gary Jones soundset downloaded off Avsim so all is well with the world. It doesn't crackle and pop or sound like a bag of old nails at idle but it's much better than the original ;)

Just JF laziness as they have shown with all the paints I've seen...badly researched and poorly executed.

Given a choice, I usually prefer to use a Gary Jones soundset myself, but in the case of the Douglas prop liners, I don't mind trying anything in which Tom Gibson is involved. Version 2 of his partnership with Jon Jefferys in a DC-6 soundset was recently published on Avsim. If you're interested, look for the file named propsound_dc6_r2800_v2_.zip -

I've only just taken my copy so have not yet had any chance to use it ...

Regards,
Ro
