Honest Review

Post by ChrisHunt »

Whilst waiting for my train earlier I took a sneak peek at PC Pilot and read a fair bit of their review of the JF Typhoon. You might say that Peter Wright (the reviewer) was less than impressed - score of 50 and this for a pay-ware product costing £24,99. I think this is the first time (possibly ever but maybe in a while) that a product by a mainstream supplier has got such a low score. I must confess I like the honesty of this review - no pandering to big boy sensibilities here. Obviously one to avoid.

On the subject of reviews - who here is a bit weary of all the 5 star reviews on the likes of Amazon Trip Advisor etc for products and places which are frankly mediocre at best. Seems that people forget that 3 stars should be average to good, 4 stars good and 5 stars absolutely outstanding!

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes you are right about these reviews but the trouble i find is who can you trust!!

Just lately i have been reading a few as i have been looking at the Tristar and MD11, i um'd and R'd over Captain Sim Tristar but missed the boat in their sale!! but of course it's not complete yet, JF Tristar looks good the PMDG MD11 is way out price wise for me and reading the reviews on Simmarket for the Sky Sim's MD11 well it's a mixed bag, some say it's Cr##p and others say not bad.

I have found over the years that freeware aircraft i have had are just if not better than payware so i'm a bit cautious spending the money that these payware aircraft are costing,

Getting back to these reviews Chris it depends of course on the reviewer's point of view,

I normally rely on the people who make the addon's due to having bought from them before but this does not help me if it's a firm i have not tried,

That JF EE Lightning looks tasty i must say [but no no no ] i must not!!

Cheers,

Roger.

Regardless of the review given for the Typhoon I wonder with it being new into service how much, if any, details were given regarding the performance envelope to 'Just Flight' so that they could replicate it in the model? :dunno: My guess would be zilch and therefore the model dynamics would only be at the very best.... guess work?

Your main problem would be that, although you can figure out the aerodynamic performance of the Typhoon by examining the plans etc. this doesn't tell you what the computer will let you do and as it took the consortium about a decade to get that right I doubt any developer could match them in a reasonable time frame!

For example of how contradictory the control laws can be, when the display pilot almost spanked into the runway at RIAT a few years back at the point where he was pulling full back at the bottom of the loop the canards were providing a full nose down pitching moment. Figure that one out!

It's most unusual.. even unheard of for someone like PC Pilot to give poor marks on a payware model. Usually, the best reports are from those who spent the money!

Versions of the Typhoon have been out for donkies now and I've had a couple.. the Alphasim version and one by that German chap.. AFD or something like that. Both were rather odd  If anything, the German model was more odd.. the Alphasim version being more generic in feel. The German model felt like the computer was flying it (if that makes sense).. such was the flight envelope. On the ground.. it felt like some drunk was in charge as it didn't like steering

At the end of the day, you have to buy these things while not taking them too seriously.. perhaps a contradiction in terms but who here will ever have the chance of flying one for real to make a comparison :)

'Bout time Tonks bid for a Typhoon course , might be quicker than a new 'pooter OS . Indeed from an Airbus to another fly by wire can only be a few days differences course !

I'll get my coat .

Re the flight performance issues - if had been that alone then perhaps Peter might have awarded a score of 75 but there were such obvious issues within the cockpit that they might have got away with it if JF had been selling it for a fiver. £25 is outrageous really for that kind of (lack of) quality. Still no doubt it would get 5 stars on Amazon.

Chris

I've also got the alphasim and AFS versions. I don't know why I got the AFS one, I haven't liked any of his previous stuff (as demo versions) which tend to be pretty unauthentic as well as unconvincing. RAF F-4F anyone?

The HUD in the AFS version was particularly poor. I can't remember what the one in the alpha model was like, but I do know that I kept that and junked the AFS one.

I did like the review - made a nice change, as mentioned. I won't be buying the JF model - but I am very interestedly waiting for the DCS: Typhoon that VEAO are working on for DCS World. I mentioned them before, and their first project, the Hawk T.1, but their second is the Tiffie, and they are the only DCS modules I'm actually looking forward to (all the rest being your typical USAF fare that have been done to death already over the years).
