FS9 Argosy ILS capture problem

Post by gannet »

Hi,
I start with the 172 at KSEA, go through the screens and then change to the aircraft I am going to use. In the default the radio is set up for KSEA and this shows in the Cessna as the CDI is live both ways- lateral and vertical.

However when I change to the Argosy on the runway there, the CDI is not functioning until I switch the SFS Radio Selector to the 2 position and then it becomes live....so, take off and sort myself out for an ILS landing at KSEA but when attempting to capture that ILS, it will show as live, but will not allow me to click the Approach button until I move the Radio selector to 1...and then the CDI becomes inactive!

This time I have read the manual, but obviously failed to understand it and I would appreciate simple advice.

Andy.

Hi Andy :)

I'm not quite sure what's been going on and tbh.. it's been yonks since I've flown the Argosy in anger! :worried: I've just had a quick look at KSEA and I wasn't seeing what I expected.. due in no small part to the AP covering the SFS selector! By the time I realised that.. I'd moved on to KJFK :wall:  From what I can see.. much depends on if you have 1 or 2 selected AND Port or Stbd (the bottom switch).. Port reads the compass and Stbd links to your GPS.. should you have one (a variation of the standard NAV/GPS switch). At JFK.. I only saw the RMIs and ILS indicator active when both radios were set to the ILS Freq but I'll have a look again as I'm no longer au fait with the SEPP2 nav setup ;) The old memory isn't what it was

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.....it may be that Port, Starboard switch which I fiddled with and then abandoned as being above my pay-grade

It's a wonderful plane to fly and I will post back after another attempt.

Andy.

edit:
added this small para from the Manual, which looks fairly vital :hide:

"Course Deviation Indicator
The CDI shows deviations from the course and glide path of a facility selected on the OPPOSITE Radio to that selected on the Radio Selector; i.e. if Nav1 is selected to the Flight System, Nav2 information will be displayed on the CDI and vice versa. It is recommended that for ILS approaches where a VOR bearing is not required, that the ILS be tuned to both radios."

I am sure it's me failing to read things properly.

A.

Sometimes.. it's a 'wood for the trees' effect mate. I didn't have the manual handy but that certainly sounds about right. Glad you're sorted

Hi,

By flicking the Radio Selector at high speed between 1 and 2 as I make the descent, I find I have captured the beam without understanding how :S and have now made a perfectly surviveable landing on the greensward at the beginning of the runway  !

Hi Andy

The model will capture the beams perfectly without the ILS indicator showing both beams active (I've found) :) I've not tried 'high speed switching'! :-O While it's nice to get a visible representation of where you are with regard to the ILS beams.. the indicator is just that.. an indicator. If you're roughly where you should be (and not above the vertical beam).. selecting Glide will drag you onto both beams for a successful landing ;)

Hi,

Thanks for the guidance !

i think the biggest problem I have is to just do short flights from the default and then try to land with a full set of tanks  . This is not a good plan, of course and coming in to land with 25% tanks allows the systems to work much better.

Off to do more flying with the Argosy!

That's something we ALL do mate. Our eagerness to fly a new model outweighs any pretence at accurate fuel loading  Glad you're happy now ;)

Hi,
Just adding to this post. I have found it impossible to get the Argosy to fly on a beam in a simple manner. Even though with a very strange combination of lever movements to get anything to happen, eventually it will capture the beam and then fly at 90* to it :S . Switching to a CalClassic Convair and she follows the beam perfectly, but switch airplanes once the Convair is lined up and the Argosy, having a mind of it's own, will need the autopilot turned on again and Nav selected....off she goes on this 90* journey again :dunno: !!
