Re: A bit more Portsmouth

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chirs and welcome :)

I've toyed with Plymouth but only superficially.. the odd crane here and there.. a few ships in the dockyard and a few more going out to sea. Portsmouth is an entirely different ball game. The basis of it is PortHigh by Simon Swallow (available at flightsim.com).. initially for FS9 but the latest download has an FSX version too. It add's many of the highrise buildings to Portsmouth as well as Fratton Park, a handful in Southsea plus HMS Warrior, HMS Victory, Semaphore Tower and the sail loft (one of) to the dockyard plus a selection of statics (modern) and an AI (or static) of HMS Ark Royal V. Oh.. how could I forget the Spinnaker Tower too ;)

I've binned the modern frigates and replaced them with ships from my era made by Mike Hudson.. all of which are available at Flightsim.com and others :) The remaining dockyard buildings and many of the ones in the city I got from 3D Warehouse and converted them for FSX using ModelConverterX, a freeware utility available on the web. There are a couple of problems.. more than a couple really, with the 3D Warehouse (Sketchup) models. They tend to be much higher detail than necessary for FS which is no bad thing except they eat up resources much quicker than bonafide Gmax/3DS models which are optimised for FS. Some of them don't convert as well as you'd wish. Finally.. and a problem for uploading them again.. is copyright. The models are given away freely to anyone able to make use of them but I honestly don't know where I'd stand with regard to uploading them as part of a FS scenery pack. Most (though not all) of the ones I use are by one author so I guess I could seek his permission if I knew how to get in touch with him.. the downloads have no contact info.

It's sort of an on going project although I'm nearing what my pc can take  In the meantime, if you have nothing at Portsmouth in FSX.. pop to www.flightsim.com and put Simon Swallow into their search engine. It will pick up the FS9/FSX version of Portsmouth High as well as Gosport for FSX (he didn't do this one for FS9 unfortunately). Additionally.. if you're adept with progs like AIFP, SAMM2 and Instant SceneryV2 (this is payware).. plop Mike Hudson into the search engine at Flightsim.com and download those old RN ships. They're available in FS9 and FSX static and FSX AI ;) To be honest.. had the ships not been available, I'd not have bothered doing anything like what you see in the shots at Portsmouth. They're a bit ropey compared to a lot of models and they're not particularly accurate (they're not meant to be) but they set the scene.. even though the Portsmouth I've put together is a lot newer and slightly out of era.

Thanks for your kind comments. I may upload bits of it if I can overcome the copyright issue but as I said above, in the meantime.. get Portsmouth High and Gosport for FSX. You'd be surprised what an impact those alone will make ;)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. it looks amazing. I have a downloaded pompey which is the fsx called Portsmouth HMNB and ferry Port looks good. Whaley has a ship moured off it like Bristol and Nelson has got a few ships in it and also the ferry port.
I tried to update the ships to the 23s and 42s but i don't know how to get it to work. I tend to sail rather then fly these days as well so using Pompey or if there was a Guz as home port and go travel around the coast with a 23. I have got AI Carriers and have changed it from boring Yank looking ships to a fleet of R06, L12, and escort fleet of 42s and 23's. I found a pilot-able Bristol but its not a bgl so i can't put it off whaley. (Me being a perfectionist and all that haha). being hunting for a Albion Class LPD but withni look :( .
Keep up the good work.

Chris

Hi Chris :hello:

Seems you've found a different Pompey to the one I've started with. Had I found yours.. I may not have bothered with mine  Whale Island has nothing in PortHigh.. there's pretty much all I described above. I could have put Bristol berthed where she is now but when I was still in the mob.. we either had a County tied up there or before that.. the Royal Yacht. I've searched high and low for a RY Britannia and the only one I can find is berthed up in Scotland as part of one of the Scotflight sceneries. I'd have nicked it from that scenery but it's part of another bgl.. drat :| Never mind.. I'm happy with the County tied up at Whaley ;)

If there's anything I can help you with ship-wise (or scenery wise for that matter) just shout and I'll see what I can do. I've Tribal class, Rothesay class, Leanders, Type 21's and Type 22 frigates.. Type 42 destroyers and of course.. the single Type 82.. Hms Bristol. There's the Flying Stations Ark Royal IV for FSX as well as Victorious. Victorious is late war though and a bit too early for me. I'm sure that there's a bloke who's made all the AI versions of the above pilotable. Can't think of his name though *-) Got a feeling I saw them on Simviation *-)

Chris.. look here at Simviation.. http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1 ... Royal+Navy or here.. http://simviation.com/1/browse-Misc-58-0 You'll have to dig a lot but there are some interesting pilotable ships in there ;)
I found the Portsmouth you're using too ;)

Hi Dave,

The scenery I have is based on Nelson being a "Airport" and the ferry port being an airport to so it's me just changing the ships around and moving some of the pontoons which he had done I will find a link for it to show you.

Hi Chris..

Ok. Portsmouth HMNB (the scenery) appears to use default FSX objects to make the place look a little more like it should. I'm presuming this is for the default FSX rather than GenX. Do you use GenX or any other replacement or are you on default FSX?

Feel free to post screenshots if you can ;)

Hi Chris :)

You either need to have a) your own webspace or b) a free account to something like Photobucket. You then link your uploaded shots to the forum. If you don't have either, you can send the shots to me as an email attachment and I'll post them here for you ;) Will PM you my email address if required :)
