ORBX England

Post by Nigel H-J »

Today after a longer wait than expected I received ORBX England after ordering it yesterday and after a long install (thought the computer had frozen at one point) took a couple of test flights the result? Somewhat disappointed in that I never realised how bl**dy flat and featureless England could be in certain areas!! 8) Never took much notice of the scenery when flying FSX Default Scenery!!!! (Now I know why Ian is staying across the other side of the Atlantic). Of course I may be judging this on the Pacific North West which I had as a demo (by kind help of Ian) over there it is an ever changing scenery whereas England is nearly all fields towns villages until you fly over the hilly areas of Derbyshire – Pennines and Lake District.

I have to say though that I do like it, flew from Waddington and easily followed the A15 up towards Scampton and beyond, though Lincoln did not look anything like Lincoln as I flew over but just before reaching Scampton there was a roundabout just as you would find if you drove along that road but it does not show everything that you would expect to see in VFR Scenery such as landmarks like Lincoln Cathedral and other roads / bridges / villages that you would recognise. I had expected this even before purchase and it does not concern me for one minute as since I first flew flight simulator back in the 1990s to the present day I have never had VFR Scenery so........ ‘What you don’t see you don’t miss’ ....so to speak.

Overall, ORBX have done an extremely good job especially with the way default airports look, not so much the large commercial ones but such places as flying clubs for example Wickenby, I used to fly from there on occasions and it is extremely good considering it is only an ORBX default one and so much better than the FSX version. One comment I do have is in relation to Duxford, they could have put in the static aircraft at least!! Still getting to grips with the settings as when flying the Capt Sim737 it does take up quite a few fps but with say the Dragon Rapid the fps are around 50 – 70 mark - all set at unlimited I may add.

Only problem that I have found is that I downloaded the patch (update) from another computer and found I could not open it to install so will have another go tomorrow, has any-one else here had this problem?

Regards
Nigel

And this from a man who lives in Lincolnshire

Sorry, Nigel - that did make me laugh  Anyway - I told you so! I'm waiting for Southern Alaska which has just gone into beta testing and is what I (and Peter) have been waiting for for a long time! The preview shots look ... well, awesome! I'll be clearing out my hanger to a couple of classic jets and some bush planes and you'll never hear from me again. Except on Sundays :worried:

As for England SP1, I can't see any installation problems reported on the support page so it's possibly a corrupted download. But I notice on the download button it does say that you MUST switch FTX Central to EU before installing the patch. The patch should contain the latest libraries but if you're not sure it's usually a good idea to install the latest library as the last thing you do after installing a scenery, airport or update. The latest library is always on the same page as the other updates and the latest is 130125 (25/01/13). http://www.fullterrain.com/support.html

EDIT: The freeware Duxford has the statics. It doesn't blend perfectly with FTX England but if you squint a bit it should be OK

Ian :)

Oy you!!!! I'll have you know that Lincolnshire does have hills, you just have to look for them!! 8)

By the time walkers they get to this point on Steep Hill they are so knackered that the lamp post has been bent over by everyone leaning on it to get their breath back!!!

Do you have the ACG Duxford if not get it. :) Then in the FTX Central set the scenery to default first then there is a feature in the menus to tell it where to inject the Orbx files in the scenery library list, "Tools/Scenery Library Configuration/FTX Scenery Library Insertion Points" just make sure it goes in below Duxford and any other non-Orbx UK airfield you might want to use. This will make sure it won't get replaced by the Orbx version.

Alright, Nigel. I do admit to having walked up the hill to Lincoln cathedral once

I must just stress that it wasn't for religious reasons - quite the opposite, really. I was having a torrid affair with a stewardess from Lincoln and I was killing time waiting for her to get back from the airport. It was a very stressful time for me as she was just 21, the 'younger woman' to the second Mrs Speedbird who was getting on a bit at 23 (I was 43 at the time and should have known better). Anyway I got the blessing of the Lincoln Imp and when she arrived we drove all the way to Bridlington for a dirty weekend. Jeez - I'm glad I'm too old for that stuff now. Driving to Tesco is far enough nowadays!

Nice place, Lincoln

Ian ;)

Hi Ian

I'm surprised you had that much energy left for a mucky week-end after climbing Steep Hill

When it snows or there is a lot of ice about quite funny watching people descending the hill especially when they get past Readers Rest as once they start sliding they really slide usually on their arses!!

Lincoln is OK but would much prefer to be somewhere near Torquay, nothing in Lincoln of interest unless you are a student (plenty of clubs and bars)

Ian, if you ever get this way again for a dirty week-end 8) :wasntme: Let me know and we can meet up!!

Regards
Nigel.

Wasn't the offer I was looking for, tbh, mate :( I'm not sure if you've completely grasped the concept of a dirty weekend

(Sorry, Nige, you keep handing me these lines tonight!)
