SWMBO and I both updated to the "offending" version.
Windows 7 home premium doesn't seem to suffer from it as yet.

Perhaps that's all it needs for things to go wrong :dunno: We all know what pc's are like and sometimes.. one flavour of update for ALL doesn't work. The only thing 'installed' recently (yesterday) was the Java update and other than the UKMIL Bucc draining the life out of it.. this pc is as reliable as a reliable thing on the most reliable day of the year  Since system restore to the day before the install.. it's been wall to wall and tree top tall again

Well that explains it! 8)

There is an option in Java Control to let it 'function' in browser windows. I turned this off while in 'Safe Mode' yesterday. I'm not sure what the impact will be when I try and use one of the progs that need it but again today.. I can't get into Java Control.. not that I really want to.. I just wanted it to NOT remind me when there was a Java update. I also note that the pc has been on 15mins now and I've not been prompted that Java 7 update 15 is available.. this I cancelled from the systray yesterday. A bit of a mystery but one I can live with in exchange for a stable OS ;)

Dave,

Completely uninstall all versions of Java from add / remove programs. Reboot and then go to www.java.com and re install (remembering to untick the box to install what ever other rubbish they try to bundle with it.) and see how that goes. :cpu:

Thanks for that Ben ;)

I'm happy to have it all running fine so will leave well alone at the moment. Did you manage to sort one of your folks pc's? *-)

Here is a handy utility I use to stop programs (like Java update and a lot of Apple ITunes stuff and other junk) automatically running at startup.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... s/bb963902

"This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP."

That's a nice wee utility Nigel, its like an XP version of the Win 7 / Win 8 option in the control panel. Good to know about.
