Java Woes

Post by TSR2 »

Hi Chaps,

Just drawing your attention to a very high risk security vulnerability that has been identified in Java. This will affect PC's / Mac's and Android devices (and likely anything else that runs Java web plug in) The consensus seems to be that folk should try and get by without Java (i.e. uninstall it from your system) however I know that quite a few of the FS development tools that some folk might be using rely on it. If you must have Java on your system make sure it is the latest release (Version 7 update 11) and uninstall any previous versions you may have. Then disable Java from running in your web browser (this is not limited to IE but affects all web browsers that support the Java plug in). There is a guide for Windows and Mac users here which explains how to disable Java in your browser. (Please note you need to update to the latest version before following these instructions. You should also only install Java from www.java.com and not from any other sources.

Hi George, the vulnerability still exists though, that's the issue. The safest bet is to stop it working with your browser. that way it will continue to be able to run the various tools installed on your computer, but wont leave you open to inadvertently being hacked through code on the web. :cpu:

I can't stop Java in IE, my ISP relies on it.

Thanks for the HU Ben.
Mine is V7 update11, now disabled for internet.
If you don't hear from me again, you'll know my internet no lon******************
BTW, what sort of security problem is there?

Speaking of viruses, apparently there's a real human gastro virus dubbed Sydney 12, going round the world.
Apparently best defence is regular hand washing (duh!) and try to avoid anyone who is infected.
Don't go out in public if you cop it, and if possible, avoid even using the same toilet if someone in your house has it.
If you can't do this, wash wash wash. :agree:
