DX10 in FSX

Post by Nigel H-J »

Sorry to sound a bit thick but in FSX you can use DX10, can some-kind soul advise me whether there is any improvement in using it or should I just run on 9?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Nigel.

Hi Nigel,

DX10 mode will only show aircraft modelled using the SDK for the newer sim (i.e. FSX Native models). As I have a fair old mix I stick with DX9, just make sure its up to date, as DX9 didn't get updated through Windows Updates for some reason. Run this and it will install any missing DX9 updates...

Thanks Ben, will install it tomorrow, is there any visual improvement/performance gain with this update? Just curious.

Kind regards
Nigel.

DX9 programs are designed to work with the latest version, as are graphic card drivers so should be more stable :)

Does anyone use DX10? I used to get lots of scenery glitches and flashing of taxi ways et al.
Not tried it on my new setup yet.

A chap over at Avsim has done a lot of work on the dx10 shaders, modifying them to eliminate most of the glitches that were present in the original. There are still some issues, but it's a huge improvement.
Avsim has a whole sub-forum dedicated to dx10 which should answer most questions.

Nearly forgot to post this one.....Just out of curiosity tried DX10 (could not download update Ben sent as IT blocked site) then went to Manchester Airport and found all AI aircraft were white with no markings!!! any ideas on this? Do I have to re-install AI to get them back in their paints?

Many thanks in advance

Nigel.

Hi Nigel,

Sorry, forgot you had no internet at home. Its an internet downloader so wouldn't be much good to you anyway. AI models tend to be pre DX10 so they show up white in DX10 mode, as will any other non DX10 aircraft. If you take a look at the link DG postedit will give you some good advice on how you can overcome some of the issues if you want to use DX10 ;)

Yup, FS9 models usually appear white although for some reason some do display properly.
There is a payware prog called "Addon Converter X" that fixes most by changing the texture format and modifying the model while the sim is running. Causes a slight performance hit, but it does work in most (but not all) cases.
