Anyone using Opus weather engine ?

Re: Anyone using Opus weather engine ?
This is an example of why REX bothers me.
Here I am sitting on the runway at PAKT ( I'm lined up on the runway facing downwind - just experimenting here ). Heavy rain and dark clouds; its all doom and gloom weather wise. Looks very convincing, doesn't it..

However, pan round to look behind me and there's flawless blue skies coming up behind me - not a whisper of cloud in sight.

Sure enough, after a short while, I am bathed in sunshine and its unbroken blue above. Heavy rain clouds one minute, clear blue the next - okay, it may happen I suppose, but surely on such a day you would see more clouds off in the distance, maybe even the next band of rain coming in. A forced weather reload didn't alter anything, but once again I was left unconvinced that what I was seeing in the sim was accurate.

Hmmm. Looks rubbish. I think you should immediately load Opus and let us know how you get on
I went to PAKT to try it but there was very little weather there so I popped up to Stewart. I couldn't recreate your REX issue but as I had it set for the Hard Winter season I thought you might like to see the frozen ground, snowy roofs and I do rather like the tyre tracks in the frost and the snow on the pickup's windscreen. As I said before, stopping is almost impossible as the wheels lock under braking and the aircraft skids. I managed it today, with skis, by using full flap and stalling on to the threshold with the brakes applied
The clouds looked consistent front and rear but I'll make sure I look over my shoulder during future REX RW flights

What's wrong with this Wx prog.
http://www.hanse-coders.net/index.php?page=self&id=1
Free, small footprint, stable. Not a memory hog.
I like it.
I use REX for the Graphics, but find its Wx prog sloooooow and no more accurate.

It sounds like a crossword clue. Eight across. 6 and 6.Vancouver wrote:Free, small footprint, stable. Not a memory hog.
Rescue Donkey!
That program looks really neat, Alex. Paul and I are both using Prepar3d, however, and REX and Opus both offer P3D installers. Although this program may well install into the sim, I'm not adventurous enough to try it myself.
I would if I still used FSX, though. So thanks for mentioning it.

Re: Anyone using Opus weather engine ?
Thanks for that Alex - I had no idea it existed. However, I must call a halt to dabbling in different add-ons and make a decision. I think I'm going to go with Opus. I tried the demo this afternoon, which only runs for 10 minutes or so before clearing all the weather and pausing the sim, but what I saw impressed me. Of course, having read all the plaudits, its difficult to resist the power of suggestion and be objective. However, the weather in the sim nicely matched what I was seeing out of the window, and it seemed to persist in all directions for the duration of the demo. I don't suppose I'll be absolutely certain until I've used it more, but I've seen and read enough to get the credit card out.

Oh, bloody hell. That means I'll probably have to as wellPaul K wrote:I don't suppose I'll be absolutely certain until I've used it more, but I've seen and read enough to get the credit card out.
I've just been flying with REX weather and every time it updates it changes. Fog to clear to cloud and back again in the space of 50 miles. Like you say, you can't tell if it's really like that but you suspect not!
The Lancaster looks lovely. Stop tempting me.

Just fired this Wx prog up to test in P3D. Seems to work seamlessly. Was pissin' down o/s & was pissin' down in the sim
I don't use P3d very often so I just give a quick impression. Tried somewhere sunnier and that worked too.

Re: Anyone using Opus weather engine ?
Well, I must be in touch with my feminine side, cos I've changed my mind again. I've followed Reed Stough's advice to another poster - " Try with the Standard Mode with Synoptic, Micro, and FSX/P3D Interpolation processes enabled. This will give you a much richer and realistic environment. " I'll give REX a bit more time and see if those settings suit me. It replicated the weather quite well this afternoon, though there was a big clear patch southwest of Cambridge which I very much doubt was there.
Over the Cambridge clag...

Well, that makes sensePaul K wrote:Try with the Standard Mode with Synoptic, Micro, and FSX/P3D Interpolation processes enabled.
If I ever understand what it means, I think I'll have a go too! BTW, that nice little Beaver (am I allowed to say that?) - did you say I was waiting for a new model, I can't remember now?
Alex - thanks for trying that out in P3D. It does look nice and simple. I'll see what Paul decides about this new REX 'breakthrough' and see where to go from there. Obviously it would be more satisfying to get everything from REX working as it cost a lot of money
