iPad/BT Info

Post by Tomliner »

If any of you are using your iPad with BT WiFi app, don't upgrade to the latest version(3.1.1). It doesn't work! You won't find any hotspots! I wish I'd seen the comments on the Apps store site for this app before I allowed it to update. I spoke to BT this morning who are aware of the problem but didn't say when it will be fixed.Technology eh! EricT

I thought you'd been quiet mate... Enforced radio silence

Can you not connect manually on an iPad or do you have to use an app to connect to WiFi?

You can connect automatically to a hotspot but you may need a code. If you give it the code for your home wifi then it will always remember it and look there first. You can get apps which just show the locations of hot spots on a local map but your iPad will already have seen any that are in signal range.

I don't use the wifi away from home. I've got the 4G model and use a 3 sim card with a 10Gb per month data bundle for £15. I rarely use more than 2Gb but there's no better deal.

Most of the stations (and pubs) that I visit use the Cloud free wifi but it's so slow and intrusive I switch the wifi off and use 3G which is much faster and works over about 75% of the area I cover.

I know it's another £100 but if you're upgrading and can afford it, it really gives you incredible freedom on your iPad. But not so useful if you don't go out much ...

Hi Ben.It's not the end of the world!I can still access my router at home with the iPad,and of couse I still have the pc.As Ian says, there is free wifi available when out and about and we can still use 3G via 3 network, and although our contract with 3 isn't as good as Ian's,it is still adequate.Having said that, the use of free BT hotspots is very handy. And using BT Openzone at home, where it uses my homehub, doesn't consume any of my monthly bandwidth allowance , although I never use anything near my allowance anyway.Just one of life's irritations. :agree: EricT
ps,hadn't realised that I'd been quite. It doesn't happen often enough accoding to SWMBO! If,in fact, I have been a bit subdued,I can only think that all the ongoing debates re P3D,high spec hardware and in depth delving into the guts of FS make me realise the limitations of my own hardware, knowledge and commitment are somewhat inadequate.Don't worry, you don't get rid of me that easily. :) EricT

 Pleased to here it mate.

RE the hardware for a decent P3D / FSX, its really not that high end at all. My MB / CPU / Memory was less than £220, then my Graphics card was about £180 if I remember correctly. Other than that, by big extravagance has been my SSD's which these days cost a lot less than I paid for them, you'll get 2 x 120GB of a decent make / speed for about £150. Don't get me wrong, its a lot of cash and I was lucky that most of that wasn't out of my own pocket, as it was payment for work that I'd done for a mate, but it doesn't have to be screaming high-end stuff ;)

Hi Ben. It's not the cost of the hardware, rather I sometimes wonder if I am getting near to what I wanted from FS.The constant change of software ie windows XP-Vista-windows7-windows8 along with FS9-FSX-P3d et al makes me sometimes wonder if it is a case of the old saying that 'when you're up to your @rse in alligators it's easy to forget that your mission was to drain the swamp'.Time will tell. :) EricT

Thanks for that, Eric. I think I've got the app even if I've never used it, so I might as well have a good one

Hi Ian.It can be useful when you are out and about. If you are a BT customer,it is free and you can also use it at home to access your own router as part of BTOpenzone(assuming you have opted in to the service) and it doesn't use any of your download allowance(as far as I recall),but I am probably teaching you how to suck eggs! EricT
