Re: Never thought of the VC10 as quiet...
It reminds me of the One-Eleven that wasn't fitted with noise suppressing nozzles as it was considered not to be excessively noisy.
Compared to some other types preceding it and current at the time it wasn't, but how times change.
Maybe some folks like to complain, like those that tried to stop the relaunch recently of jets regulars into Southend only to admit afterwards they hardly notice them at times and noise is not an issue.
One old guy even said they he didn't find them a problem and there were not noisy but would happily claim the compensation the airport authorities are willing to offer.
World gone mad

That's not a bad increase in complaints is it.. 23 to 958
I can think of nothing more worthy than living next to an airfield then complaining about the noise

Reminds of the time Concorde, before entry into service, was scheduled to go in to LHR and the visit was cancelled. BAA still received hundreds of postcards complaining of the noise it made.
If God had meant us to fly, he would have given us tickets.

It is not "excessively noisy".Garry Russell wrote: It reminds me of the One-Eleven that wasn't fitted with noise suppressing nozzles as it was considered not to be excessively noisy.
Its engines bear the name of Scotland's fastest flowing river.
Speyside distilleries produce more whisky than any other region.
Enough said.
Or to put it in another way:
It is the melodic reverberant sound of a once strong aircraft industry.
And it's not the aircraft's fault nobody wanted to listen...
Cheers,
Nick

Perhaps it's also the fact the Herc is slower - i.e. the noise is present for longer than the VC10 which perhaps "lingers" around Brize for a shorter time? Of course you've got the prop noise in addition to the gas turbines driving it.
When I lived under the flight path at SOU / EGHI, I could tell every airliner departing by its sound, but the 146, teh DHC-8, the ERJ145 and the BAe Another Technical Problem were perceived far quieter than the little Trislander which hung in the air like a formation of three angry hornets.

I was in Southampton High Street once with a Trislander clawing for altitude.
Made itself well known for quite sometime
Years ago when One-Eleven testing at Hurn was a frequent event, the residents sucessfully got the Colledge of Air Training Beech Barons flights reduced due to noise complaints
Seems as intimated above it's perhaps the kind of noise and the time subejcted to it.

Can't fit a Herc to a de-tuner/silencer!

If the Herc is noisy outside - consider what its like inside! I thought that the latest multi bladed prop design were supposed to be a lot quieter.
When I lived in Reading in the 80's Concorde was horrendous as the noise reflected off the sides of buildings & could be a lot worse if the sky was composed of certain clouds & humidity. One forgave it though because it was such a beautiful sight!
The HP Jetstream with Astazous were horrible inside on the climb out too - prop tips going supersonic - bit like Harvards......

The Skyvan 2 was horrendous on landing but on take off the sound went beyond the horrendous din and went a lot quieter as they opened up
The F50 and especially the ATP are a lot noisier landing than taking off
