Graffiti

Graffiti is a blight on our urban environment,but at one time it was possible to find a bit of wit,three examples of which follow.The first two are certainly true because I saw them myself,the third I heard of.
1) In the early 1960's there was a deodorant called Apmlex or Ampex which was advertised on billboards and showed two men standing either side of a woman and giving her dubious looks.On Birmingham's New Street station some wag had written under one man,'My name's Pete and it ain't my feet' and under the other man 'My name's Jack and it ain't my back'
Under the woman was 'My name's Annie'

2) On a poster outside a church was 'Jesus Saves' followed by 'With The Woolwich'

3) On a similar poster was 'Jesus Saves Fallen Women' followed by 'Ask Him to save one for me'

I remember the deoderant ad. I think the product was Amplex so you were nearly there. The slogan used to go something like 'Got a complex?.. get Amplex'

Not seen any graffiti for a long while. It wasn't the done thing in Berkshire and here, folk can't afford the paint!

The last memorable graffiti I saw was back in the early 70's. Along a nearby railway line was painted a rather shapely naked lady, and above her was written "F@ck You Caboose". The sheer goofiness of the graffiti always made me snicker when I saw it.

A few years back at the Cannes Film Festival was a poster advertising 'Free Willy', underneath which somebody had written 'form an orderly queue'.

Notice in a train toilet: Do not flush while standing in a station. Written underneath: except Southampton.

That remind me of an old one from around here. There has always been a rivalry between Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Written above the urinal in a DC nightclub I used to visit was "Flush twice - Baltimore needs the water!"

One of the slogans was "someone's not using Amplex" which was parodied on TW3 with 3 tramps, one of whom (I think Lance Percival) walks off in disgust muttering "some bastard's using Amplex".
As for seeing any lately, no, but an old favourite of mine is Bill Stickers is innocent!.
