Gas Turbine Development

Post by Garry Russell »

Interesting vid about the development of the Gas Turbine in the 1940's & '50s's

Such pride in the tone...and justifiably too.

Hey Garry.
Thanks for posting that. :)

I found the part in the film when the engine test in the lab went tits up interesting and believe I have the reason it did so.

The tech was moving the knob to the left to increase RPM.

When you want more power the knob should rotate to the right! .. You know..like in Spinal Tab! :worried:

BTW
That scene was so corny I could have printed a screen shot of it, spread some butter on it. and et it!

I've not seen that film for years apart form those scenes they used in documentaries such as this.

Corny to the extreme and typical of a British film of the time as things go wrong someone always seems to turn up with a pot of tea

There's some fantastic footage of the STP-Paxton and Lotus 56 turbine-powered cars at Indianapolis on YouTube. It's amazing how close they came to winning the 1967 and '68 races. Joe Leonard led the '67 race for an amazing 171 of 196 laps completed before a transmission bearing failed.
