How not to sell cars

Post by TSR2 »

I recently change my beloved Rover 620Ti, for a new model. Not that there was anything wrong with my pride and joy, but with my wife now well on her way to getting a full driver’s license, there was no way of getting her car insurance on the big Rover. Over the past 6 months I’ve driven a few hire cars with work, and one that I really liked the look of was the Astra Sports Tourer (Estate for most of us). It’s a lovely car to drive, even if it does have the most ridiculous handbrake, an "on / off" switch, where the handbrake should be. The other car I was considering was the Mini Clubman, yes the little Mini with the suicide door. I really like the look of it, still a bit sporty looking although possibly not the most practical with an almost 2 year old.
So two Sundays ago, we went down to a local Vauxhall dealer so as I could show Lucy the Astra and find out what sort of deals where available. Its worth pointing out that I’m a big fan of British manufacturing, and in the absence of mass market British car companies these days, I would settle for the fact that a car was built in Blighty. Vauxhall (Opel / GM) are under a lot of commercial pressure in Europe, and the plant in Elsmere Port is under threat of closure, so all the more reason to look at the Vauxhall (in my head anyway)
So in we walked, 11:15 on a Sunday morning and the dealership was surprisingly busy, not to worry, I’ll show Lucy and Daisy round some of the Astra Hatchbacks on display and wait for someone to become free. After 10 minutes of trying to attract the attention of a member of staff, I walked up to a desk where a suited chap sat shuffling papers. He continued shuffling his papers for a good 30 seconds while I stood there, before looking up and saying “yes?” as though I was some naughty school boy. I was a bit disappointed at his lack of enthusiasm, but asked if they had any of the Astra Estates, to which he replied no, and then (after I gave him a look of surprise) he pointed at the door and said “there might be one round the back.”
I wondered over to the door to see if there was one “round the back” more than a little hacked off by this guy’s approach. Having failed to find one, I came back inside as I still wanted to have a chat with someone to see what deals where available and to find out if there was another local dealership which had an estate model we could take a look at. We were completely ignored for 15 minutes, before I finally gave up and left.
I drove a mile along the road to the Mini dealership where we were all welcomed and treated courteously and with respect. After much umming and ahhing we bought a Mini Countryman, not a car that I was particularly fond of, but it ticks all the boxes from economy, servicing, insurance etc.
I was still in a state of disbelief as to how badly we had been treated by Vauxhall, that I emailed the Dealership and Vauxhall UK to let them know about my experience so they could make sure it doesn’t happen again.
On Monday afternoon I had a phone call from the Manager of the dealership, who was very apologetic.
However, the response I received from Vauxhall UK was… pathetic. “Thank you for your email regarding the service you received at ***, whilst Vauxhall does not run dealerships your comments have been noted.”
Whilst Vauxhall does not run any dealerships??? Frankly I don’t care that you don’t run the dealerships, but by god you have a vested interest in ensuring they do a good job. My heart sank, because regardless of how efficient Elsmere Port becomes, or how good the cars are that they produce, this approach to customer service from Vauxhall will surely seal their fate :(

Yes, Ben,
You try to buy local, but sometimes you wonder whether ANYBODY really cares.
Don't know whether you've heard about our local beetroot situation? Apparently,Aldi (where we do not shop) started selling tins of beetroot at 75cents, against the usual dollar fifty. Coles and Woolworths, with about 85% of the retail market, decided they could not take this, and dropped their price to match. This caused trouble for the locals. A philanthropist saw their plight and bought up big. Coles and Woolworths refused to buy from him at any price, so he gave away free tins to anyone who would take them. The short story is that the local growers ploughed their crops and the industry is non existent. :'( :OB:
Cheers, Mike.

Hi Mike,

Sounds very similar to here. Even the humble cherry tomatoe in most uk supermarkets is imported from Morocco of all places! As someone said to me a few years ago "Nowadays we all know the value of everything but the worth of nothing"

Your Vauxhall dealer sounds like my Fiat dealer. Two years ago I had a quite sporty Grande Punto which was great fun but when the roads were icy I could not get off my drive as the wide, low profile tyres lost all grip. I quite liked the look of the 4WD Fiat Sedici so went to the dealer to ask about a Sedici. I was treated in a very dismissive manner, the "Salesman" telling me in a very offhand way that I had no chance of getting a Sedici as he had a 50 buyer waiting list and gave me a very strong feeling that he thought I could not afford one. I phoned my nearest Jeep dealer asking about a Patriot. They had Patriots in stock so I went and had a drive, liked it and bought a new one after a week waiting for mine to be delivered. All the Jeep dealers staff were very polite, attentive and helpful. They were mortified, when upon collection I had to take theJeep back due to the oil pressure light coming on, I suspected just a loose wire but they kept the car overnight for attention and lent me a new demonstrator for me to use over the weekend. If I did ever buy a new car I wouldn't go to that Fiat dealer.

It's unbelievable that companies can still give such poor service in the current economic climate. On the other hand, I think the guy's done you a great service, Ben. I just checked in the Which? Car survey to see if Vauxhall dealers had a poor service reputation. Indeed they have!

Out of the 31 new-car manufacturers selling in the UK, Vauxhall showrooms are rated 28th (by their customers - not by Which?) with a score of 66%. The only ones worse are Seat, Renault and Fiat. Mini showrooms come 6th with a score of 77% so this confirms your own experience.

The reason I think he's done you a service is that the Corsa only achieves an owner satisfaction of 70% compared to the Mini's 83%.

Speaking of service I have to admit that, even after 40 years of being in front-line customer service, I'm not always as respectful as customers expect :(
On a very busy train yesterday a guy, quite reasonably, asked me if there was a refreshment trolley. But he overstepped the mark!

Guy on Train: Is there any threat that somebody might come along and offer us some refreshments on this service?
Me: I'm sorry sir, we don't provide a refreshment trolley on this particular service.
GoT: (Quizzical and expectant look)
Me: If you'd like to pass your comments on to our Customer Services Team you can do so via our website or I can give you contact details.
GoT: (sneering) What would you do if I died through lack of nourishment?
Me: We'd give you a decent burial, sir, and say lots of nice things about you.
GoT: (Gobsmacked)
Me: Sharp exit (giggling - in the knowledge that if we receive a complaint my boss will laugh his socks off)

Ian :)

I had the same (bad) experience with my local BMW and Mini dealership. I asked whether they had any 6 series BMWs in stock and he couldn't be arsed to get up from his desk. He waved to the door and said "there may be one outside".

Glad to hear they took care of you at Mini. When I bought mine, the nearest dealer was 300 km or so away, but they were the best to work with. When Mini USA finally decided to bring a dealer to Des Moines, they initially spoke with the BMW dealer and upon hearing feedback from customers they granted the dealership to the place that peddles Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, and Lexus. Directly across the street from said BMW dealer. I'm thinking that didn't go over so well.
When all else fails, manipulate the data.

I think to some extent its the luck of the draw, as I suspect George and I went to the same dealership as there can't be that many in Tyne & Wear.
Thanks for the "Which" feedback Ian. Much of the attraction with mini was that if I was away and Lucy needed help with the car, she can phone them and they will come and sort it, or bring her a free courtesy car if needed.

You are correct Ben, but when I went it was run by Mill Garages, it has since changed hands.

I wouldn't care I had previously bought two or three Audis from Mill Garages at the Stadium of Light.
