Woodford Derelict Vulcan

Post by VEGAS »

Hi guys,

Well I've had a rather interesting day today. ;)

Spent the day training in an old disused hangar at the now closed Woodford aerodrome.

A shadow of its former self, the place was like a ghost town.

Whilst there I seized the opportunity to take a few pictures of the derelict Vulcan XM603.

I used to visit the place every year as a child and watch the airshows. I think the Vulcan has been in the same spot since then!

Woodford is due to be flattened in the future to make way for a residential development

I've not got any knowledge of whats happening to XM603. But its doesn't look good. :'( :'(

Cheers for that Eddie :)

The Vulcan's been on imminent scrapping notice since last year :'( ...TBH I'm surprised it's still there :worried:

Did'nt know that mate. How sad. :'(

Awful seeing such a beautiful piece of aviation heritage in her birthplace, yet in such a sorry state.

I had a feeling scrapping was imminent. Could'nt see someone wanting her in their back garden. :dunno:

Not unless your one of us lot. :)

Yes.. a shame when they get to this state :( Just had a look around and there's nothing new posted about her future. She seems to be destined for destruction as Garry points out.

There was a lot of debate about this on one of the aviation forums last year

Of course there were the usual calls to save it...meaning that someone else please come up with lots of money, but as you see that has not happened

If it could be moved, wasn't the spar stressed or cut as part of testing for XH558s return to the air? I would say it's beyond economical restoration the correct thing to do rather than just scrap it on site would be to dismantle or even cut it (without damaging potential spares) and donate it to Bruntingthorpe or wherever XH558's home will be. To be used for further spares or instructional use to show visitors the insides of the aircraft and the restoration procedures taken on getting XH558 back into the air. Cockpit removed for visitors to enter and look around, since the B1 at Cosford has been closed to the public for ages now.

I would have thought that any usable bits would have bee swapped out for XH558 already from this and any other Vulcans they could get their hands on.

Pity it can't go to Ringway or even Speke as an exhibit.

It will be purely down to money...or rather the lack of it

It's such a shame that she was 'alive' not that long ago...

And that at one point they were even talking of flight...
