In a way
Being completely different, or almost so is better than being slightly different
With XP/W7 is is only some things that changed and that digs holes and lets you fall in because you think it's the same but not quite.
Personally I would rather a total change if a change has to be done because it it easier to remember how something does things in it's own way, but more difficult to try and remember the small changes amongst the false sense of cosiness a development of existing throws up.
This is the problem I'm getting with W7, it is doing things differently in much the same way.
It's difficult to explain but it is easier to learn something completely new...because you don't get led into thinking it is as was before because it CLEARLY isn't.
So you know that before you try so are not led into a false belief as I was with W7

On the whole not too bad then? It's like Flight, They ripped it's heart out and shoved it down it's throat
Then they pulled all it's guts out and filled it with shite.
Now at the age where I know I like girls but can't remember why!
Re: Get it while its hot...
I've been ordered to take a holiday and get over it.
Which is what I've done, I'm at 35,000 heading to Mac Field ... hopefully he's left the key (while he's off in the new world.)
to the door under the mat
..
and he key to the liquor cabinet under the authenticated Hunter die cast model replica

I'm not sure about this
Trouble is I've got so involved in my little Samsung Tab that I've been living in a fantasy world of google and android apps and it's like a fairytale world where new toys are hidden under every rock and they all seem to do totally amazing things without causing any headaches. Installing and uninstalling at the touch of a finger. No moving parts and real portability. No wonder tablets are selling quicker than they can make them!
The only reason I turn on the laptop now is for keyboard input and FSX. Not having anything to do with Microsoft and fiddling with Windows for a month has been a real holiday! I think I'll leave W8 until laptop replacement time.

Re: Get it while its hot...
I still plan to move to Win7 as soon as I get the time to build the machine
Haven't you done that yet?
Well having spent the money on Win7, I'm probably going to give Win8 a miss in my normal style of skipping every other release. And the company I work for (10,000+ employees worldwide) is only now about to roll out Win 7 (from XP) so makes no sense to even consider upgrading just as I'm getting very used to Win 7.
I know Microsoft needs to keep reinventing to generate revenue but for the average person (and definitely companies), it's too soon to move on.

Hi Ben
Just spoken to my nephew and you're right, programmes are not shut down, just moved to the background.

Its different. By default uses your windows live ID to logon to the PC with, but you can select the option to use a local account instead.
I've a Windows Phone and really like the Metro interface (the little tiles that have replaced the start menu) however its a learning curve. I've no idea how to close a program, and I'm beginning to think that you dont close them, the OS simply seems to suspend them when they arent active. As a result, there is no cross in the top righthand corner to close them with. The desktop in its traditional sense is still there, albeit without a start button. Ive installed Putty, GIMP and PSPad all without issue and the seem to work as expected. The built in stuff like Maps, Weather, Mail, Messenger etc are all very nice and work well. This is going to be a hell of a learning curve.
don't know if you saw the reg hack to change the UI in win8 back to traditional win look

Or use typical win power user short cut keys ie Start + d will put you on the desktop.

I'm relieved to know I won't be stuck with that phone look interface.

"to view this content please install MS Silverlight"
Er, ok but I thought I had it already as I needed it for Windows Media Centre and the Sky player.
Download.
Install

Really.
Could someone draw some pictures of it and post them up instead
