Military sim game - ARMA 2

Post by TSR2 »

It seems this is a few years old now, but I've just seen some screen shots and it looks amazing. Has anyone ever tried it? what do you think?

Cheers Colin,

Just read an article on the BBC and the graphics looked superb. Apparently they're working on the next version for release later this year. I'll give the demo a go

I played a smaller demo when it was first released, I don't remember much of it as it was a small demo just shooting a few bad guys, but I do remember it is compatible with TrackIR if you use one.

This article Ben ?

I played Operation Flashpoint online with some friends many years ago ( including Ed Walters of Plane Design ), and I liked the idea of getting away from the normal scripted linear FPS plot and being able to go anywhere, drive / fly / fire anything you came across, and hunt down members of the opposite team. Don't know whether my declining reflexes are up to ArmA 2, but I might give that demo a try myself.

I have been playing both the original ARMA and ARMA 2 for a number of years. IMHO it's one of the best battlefield simulators around (note simulator and not game). There are some game type elements but they don't detract too much from the experience (receiving a monetary 'bounty' for capturing/re-supplying towns or killing the enemy etc. which allows you to buy upgrades to vehicles and equipment). Aircraft/helicopters are available but they are very 'arcade-ish' as they are designed to be flown using just the mouse as well as with full flight controls. The developers of the game are the same ones now producing the 'Take on Helicopters' game which uses the ARMA 2 game engine with much improved flight modelling for the choppers.

There is a huge modding community producing add-on missions, weapons, vehicles and troops very much in the vein of Flight Sim and they are all free. However, the recently released 'free edition' does not allow the use of 'modded' content nor does it display the best graphics (which are phenomenal but need an uber computer to run flat out but at 'normal' settings it's still more than enough 'eye candy').

It's designed for multiplayer use both via the internet or LAN or as a single-player sim. Missions are in the format of 'Deathmatch' (player v player), Co-op (player(s) v A.I.), Capture the Flag (can be played as a co-op) and Capture the Island (co-op or players v players with A.I. support).

I play regularly as both my wife and daughter both have the sim too and we play over our LAN but have also had internet games with the likes of our very own 'Techy 111' (Tony, before he blew his rig up) and 'Cap't Pugwash' (Dave).
