Most traction motors are sealed, so water intrusion isn't a problem. The bigger problem is the contacts corroding if they're left sitting in water for any length of time. We were always warned to keep the locomotive moving if there's standing water because if we stopped, the wheels could rust to the rails within 10 minutes.

Actually, all that white stuff was ectoplasm appearing as the train materialised out of thin air onto the track. Not a bad solution to the world's congestion problems, if a bit of a b*gger to clean up afterward.
