Having had to restart again.. I've tried disabling KAV then going to FSA and I made it back here without a restart. If KAV IS the problem.. and it looks like it.. the reasons I've not noticed it before now (or only just noticed it) are a) I've not flown much this year for obvious reasons and have only popped to FSA once in a blue moon to keep my membership active and b) I've only recently upgraded to IE8 which I feel certain is co-conspiritor in all this. It didn't happen with IE6 or 7
At least it's not a sign that the pc is about to let go again which is more than a great weight off my shoulders
Yes.. that's true. These days, you're painted into a corner.. forced to make upgrades you don't want because websites you need no longer support what you're using. While this system is on WinXP.. I know I can't go further than IE8 and as far as upgrades go.. I gather those with automatic updates turned on will have to take IE8 if they're on 7 and those already on 9 will have no option but to take what comes.. updates will be downloaded and installed automatically. I see the arguments for this.. primarily, it narrows opportunities for hackers. As long as M$ keep it to critical updates and not 'everything'.. that's not a bad thing
Yep.you have to update for online stuff to continue to work propely but you onboatd systems become incresingly in compatable
All you can do is make the best of it but it's hard work
As I mentioned above, using an AV can cause more trouble than a virus when it questions every major move then threatens you with the wrath of the Gods if you press OK to accept.
Visions then of the scene in Airplane where they are frisking the little old lady and fatigue clad sunglasses wearing men overloaded with weapons are walking through..... are the real viruses getting through??
Possibly not...well probably not but AV that does behave like that isn't easy to trust.
I struggled for days trying to get a newly loaded programme to register until I twigged it, turned off AVG and bingo, it went straight away but with AVG running it would not accept the activation code.

Yes.. I've had that happen too. UK2000 Xtreme series don't like KAV (or it doesn't like them)! Try installing one and you'll find it not there
Ah well.. I've just taken a VERY out of date McAfee AV off this pc (remember that one Ben ) and installed Microshite Essentials. I needed a 'hotfix' which was a little confusing but with that installed, M$E decided to run and it's now running it's first scan. I'm probably confusing the issue as this pc (XP2400) is still on IE6 (bless that IE!!) but thankfully, it was SP2 (WInXP that is) otherwise I'd have been in do-do
Ooo.. it's finished and I have a nice green tick! I can see this replacing AVG on the office pc which didn't like the last major update so didn't
I've been using Security Essentials since it was released, partly on Ben's advice and backed up by its performance in comparative tests. Recently, a little anomaly showed up with MSE after running CCleaner. Before running CCleaner untick the MS AntiMalware box under the Applications tab. If it's ticked then CCleaner will clear out the cache which tells MSE that it's up to date. If it can't find the relevant cookie then the icon will go orange and tell you you haven't done a scan recently even if you just have. Just something to be aware of. Otherwise - it's brilliant and hassle free!
As for the argument between IE8 or IE9, why not just use Google Chrome? I've got all the browsers loaded for testing websites but the others feel cluttered, old-fashioned and clumsy compared to Chrome. The world is heading for a Google/Apple split, I reckon.
Well.. IE8 or IE9 depends on what OS you're using. While I'm still on this pc in it's current state of dress, IE9 is out of the question as it's not compatible with WinXP. I believe Win7 users will have to go IE9 soon or choose an alternative to IE but that's something for another day. For better or worse, I usually stick with 'native' bits.. eg, IE and have only ever put Firefox on because some French FS sites will only let you download using FF.. strange but true! Download using IE and you always get a corrupted file message!
