I have 7 HDDs which I am currently formatting and erasing before recycling. They range from 500GB SATA IIs to 150GB Raptors.

I've been looking at 2TB drives which are currently at about £180.

I never defrag anymore, and I think with todays quick HDD's theres is no actual need for it anymore.

I have had numerous installs and uninstalls and not defragged a single file for the last 4 years .... I have not noted any decreased performance at all what so ever.

I'm running FSXsp2 with an over all average of 30fps (locked) with ease and have done so always. Kids use the machine for all kind of heavy graphic (and graphical) games without any problems either ....

So I have no need for yet a nother program just sitting and hogging...

Are you sure you haven't got a automatic defrag schedule on in the background which runs once a week, without noticing?

Although you have XPSP2 on my Win7 it was defaulted to on and runs every Weds afternoon, so it's does very little, often and isn't noticeable.

Darren..

I think Dan was saying he has FSX SP2 not WinXP SP2. Knowing Dan, he's been on Win7 since day one or thereabouts :) It doesn't default to weekly in WinXP.. it doesn't default to anything in WinXP

Might have auto-defrag on then and not realise.

A nice touch if it does that.. specially if you don't realise it's doing it! I'm one of the many who don't bother with such things I'm afraid. I've thought about it from time to time, looked at the drive and windows has said it doesn't need to be defragged.. which is odd but there you go *-) I made an exception with FSX. The drive was clean for the install and I defragged it soon after. I don't think it improved FSX much but that was said to be the done thing to do :)
