1940s Lockheed plant camouflage

Post by speedbird591 »

I've just had an email with these photos of the Lockheed plant in Burbank during the war. Apparently it was covered by camouflage netting and heavily disguised as a residential area to deter a possible Japanese air attack. Eye witnesses say that it was so strong that people were employed to walk and cycle around on it to increase the deception. Apparently, Boeing did something similar in Long Beach. Apologies to those who've seen it before - I hadn't and there may be others who are interested.

Ian :)

I'd be tempted to think it was an April Fool but they look quite convincing!

Oh sorry. There was another one with aeroplanes in it which I forgot to post! Just to prove it wasn't a ball bearing factory or something.

The famous Boeing "Plant 2" in Seattle was similarly camouflaged:

The art of camouflaging being to disguise something as something completely different, you'd think Boeing would have disguised their plant as a factory that made decent aeroplanes *-) 8)

in two seperate attacks, aka the Lookout Air Raids - Sept 42
