Changing names of aricraft carriers was very fashionable back in the 1940-1950's:
HMS Eagle was originally laid down as Audacious
HMS Ark Royal (as was mentioned above) was Irrestible - still is, in many ways!!!
HMS Hermes was Elephant (the 'original' Hermes having been cancelled)
Oh, and there was a Leander-class frigate, HMS Phoebe, 'renamed' HMS Hero for the BBC TV series "Warship" - apparently it caused the Soviet intelligence services not a little confusion, as they couldn't understand how the Royal Navy had a frigate they hadn't seen before.
A new Ark Royal ?

We could have loads of QE Carriers then.AndyG wrote:Oh, and there was a Leander-class frigate, HMS Phoebe, 'renamed' HMS Hero for the BBC TV series "Warship" - apparently it caused the Soviet intelligence services not a little confusion, as they couldn't understand how the Royal Navy had a frigate they hadn't seen before.
Queen Elizabeth, rename it to Prince of Wales after 12 months, then rename to Ark Royal after another 12 months etc... do it on a rotation basis, after 6 years it's back to Queen Elizabeth. Just change the name plates and numbers each time.
Although we have been doing the same thing with our [REDACTED] for the last [REDACTED] years, we really only have [REDACTED].
