What is best for Flight Sim?

So would like to go for an i7 - Extreme the 990 being the biggest and best I believe.

If you really want to pay £600+ for a CPU, then you are way out of my league.

As GHD indicated i7-2600k is the way to go for about a third of the price. I've read that the I7 series on the 1366 socket are going the way of the dodo. They are not for gaming but workstations.

Do I get the impression that the quad core i7-2600 8m cache 3.4Ghz chip (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52213), would be better than the hex cored i7-990X 12M cache, 3.46 Ghz (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52585) The price is certainly better,

I believe that it (i7-990x) features triple channel DDR3 so it would be 3,6,9 or 12 Gigs of matched DDR3. (http://www.multimediaboom.com/intel-cor ... arly-2011/)

Again Price wise VelociRaptor appears better although, not as fast as SSDs. Although, bottom line, it only needs to be fast ENOUGH (Ban the fuzzies).

O.K. So more food for thought, (Gosh my head hurts ! ! ! ).

I need to start ordering this beast soon so I must get off the fence a make a decision over the next couple of days.

If you are going for the i7-2600 (seems to be as good as it gets at the moment) get the i7-2600K version for a few pounds more. This is the unlocked version which in a P67 (not H61 or H67) chipset seems to allow easy overclocking without the usual risk of blowing everything up a la Techy111.

Some motherboards (Asus P8P67 top end versions?) seem to have a button to press and the system goes and works out the best (and safest?) overclocking speed. Seems like a 3.4Ghz CPU can go to 4.3Ghz using standard cooler http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i5-2 ... -review/11.

The rest of the kit I cannot comment on - I'll be using my existing components when I get my i5-2500K. And the overclocking is something I will try later, but at least I will have a system capable of it.

If you haven't made up your mind yet, motherboards with the Intel Z68 chipset are now appearing. This is supposed to combine the best of the H67 and P67 chipsets (overclocking and onboard GPU) and also to be beneficial with SSDs (? don't know anything about these ?)

Thanks; my current PC is from them and I'm going to use them for my next PC. Problem is, I spend hours/days/weeks fiddling around changing the spec & can't decide!!! I want something that will run FSX with the VFR scenery cranked up without a hiccup or stutter...if thats possible!!

Do you run FSX on your i7 or FS9 Paul?

Would this allow me to run FSX with high sliders, lots of scenery at acceptable frame rates?
My 2.3 Quad Core runs okay with sliders middle or lower. Struggles with complex aircraft, scenery and with sliders at high end.
Not looking for a massive fps increase but would like 15-20 over complex scenery areas. Ramp up water effects etc.
