Re: Skype
Hi AD,
Skype is like picking up the phone and making a call
Install the software, register a username and setup your hardware: headset with mike or headphones and separate mike..or you can buy a Skype phone. It's much like Messenger but with voice and video for those who have a webcam...basically free calls, anywhere in the world. You have to know your recipients Skype username to ask for the connection or you can be 'invited' by someone who wants to talk to you....and they have to be online of course, timezones etc..
Up until recently I had regular chats with members of the forum ( a recent HD failure and complete reinstall has left me unable to use skype..hardware issues, not skype, still trying to sort it out)
After installing skype you can make a test call to make sure your comms are set up correctly..if not there's help to sort it out
Try it, it's easy....
ATB,
Derek

Re: Skype
Can also be a great time waster! But very useful for also talking as well as making file transfers ( picture, text files etc) at the same time. If video gets 'clunky' because of a poor broadband link or busy lines then just use for sound or just instant messaging thro the key board. I only use for 'puter to 'puter, but one can subscribe for use to fixed or even mobiles I believe.

My significant other is from Germany and I have a subscription for £3 a month that gives unlimited calls to landlines anywhere in Western Europe. i.e. she can call her mother for 2 hrs a night, every night and it costs £3 for the month!!!!

As with all of these things though, remember to set your privacy settings so that only friends etc can call you otherwise you get voicemail spam.
