'Tearing' in pan mode?

Post by Trev Clark »

I started to see some 'jaggies' in FSX and thought my 2 year old Nvidea 9400GT card might be on the way out. As I had not touched it (or it's driver, working on the 'if it ain't broke method) since I had it, I thought a new driver may sort it! It has, however, I now get some 'tearing', mainly in the VC when I pan about.

My pan speed is high, but this was not a problem before, can anybody advise what I can change? Apart from slowing the pan rate down?

I ran my CFG file through that online configurator thingy and it did a few things, one of which was a vsync fix which I didn't have. Vsync should prevent tearing.

This is the link - http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

However you may find your FPS jumping about wildly, to prevent this you have to set in game FPS to unlimited and use the FPS Limiter program to settle it all down, but using it means you can't use DX10.

Back up your FSX.cfg file then give it a go, if it doesn't do anything go back to the old one.

Thanks Darren, I had just found the Verty Sync and from memory, thought that might be the key, I made sure it was set to on via the Nvidea control panel.

I also took the plunge with the 'tune up' and am pretty happy with what it has done too! I still do not have the external limiter, as the read-me is in German and I am not 100% sure how to use it!

Here is my 'report'...
You don't have a BufferPools section!, adding optimized settings.
HIGHMEMFIX was added to your config!
ALLOW_SHADER_30=1 has been added to make FSX Shader 3 compatible
Aircraft shadows removed for performance. Use Conservative to prevent this change.
Ground shadows kill performance, adjusting.
Your FIBER_FRAMETIME_FRACTION was set to 0.2! If you don't like this change use Conservative mode. Your TextureMaxLoad and SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT values will help prevent blurries.
Adjusting TextureMaxLoad to 12 based on your hardware.
SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT has been added to your configuration to prevent blurries.
SmallPartRejectRadius have been added to your config for performance
Adjusting SOUND_LOD for improved performance when using AI sounds.
Removing overlay tips to avoid graphics corruption.
We suggest to try setting FPS to unlimted inside FSX, and use an EXTERNAL FPS limiter. You'll experience a massive performance increase. Download the limiter here
MAKE SURE to disable Transparency Anti-aliasing for improved smoothness with your NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT card.

*** ATTENTION PLEASE READ *** the above changes were applied to the fsx.cfg file you uploaded! not the one FSX uses! so, if you want to apply this to your configuration make sure you download the tweaked fsx.cfg file suggested by the tool. (check below)

I've just re-run it myself I set it to "conservative" rather than normal and it disabled the Vsync settings. I never had tearing so I can now run FSX without the FPS Limiter program and use DX10. :)

It did some new things as well since last time so it looks like it is getting updated with new tweaks. Best to have another look in a couple of months I think.

Can you just let me know how to get the limiter working, please?

I am happy with the changes, but have never had any joy using 'Unlimited' FR in the sim itself! They say with the external limiter, it works well though.

English instructions

Be aware that where you place the folder must remain or it will break its use and you will need to reconfigure the bat file

USE:

Run FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar and click SEARCH EXECUTABLE

browse for and select FSX.exe

set frame limit to 30 under MAXIMUM FPS

Click CREATE BAT

Once complete close the interface and use the created file fsx.exe.limited.bat to start FSX (double click it)

set frame lock to UNLIMTED in FSX and use the AG slider to tune

You MUST have JAVA installed to use that interface

http://www.java.com/en/

Now here is the deal... this attacks the UNLIMITED FRAME LOCK problem related to Vsync introduced by Aces in SP1/SP2. Instead of tuning the FRAME LOCK you will tune the AUTOGEN slider for smooth results where you are flying. Leave the FSX frame lock slider at UNLIMITED at all times.

You can fine tune this app as well...

I found 30 was the sweet spot for all occasions. I would suggest no less than 24 and no more than 30 but start with 30.

FSX must always be started by clicking the created command line BAT file.. NOT the FSX desktop icon

See if this has a positive effect... especially you i7 people and try this WITHOUT the affinity mask setting in the config file (It wont be there if you did not add the affinity mask line)

There is no need to change ANYTHING else. You must make sure to start FSX with the BAT file and not the desktop shortcut

Tune using the autogen slider.. do not change frame lock.. leave it at unlimited

The issue this tool attacks is the one introduced with SP1/SP2 whereby Vsync creates HI/LOW stammer in the frame rate. Using this tool as posted will allow the full priority of UNLIMITED to the application by the hardware but governs the frame rate stammer.
I just created a shortcut of the batch file and changed the Icon to an FSX icon then renamed it "FSX - FPS Limiter" and dropped into my games folder where I run them from.[/quote]

The Vert Sync problem has returned.....with a vengance!

So I am afraid I am back again!

I had to re-install (clean, brand new HD) FSX and Acceleration on my new rebuilt Windows 7 system.

I have run the 'tune up' which says it is perfect (but I still have 'tearing' on panning) and am still struggling with the external limiter, which I never got the hang of last time!

I have Java, but when I create (having found the root fsx.cfg file) the 'BAT' the whole window just closes down, and I have no idea where the file is, if it has created one.

USE:

Run FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar and click SEARCH EXECUTABLE

browse for and select FSX.exe

set frame limit to 30 under MAXIMUM FPS

Click CREATE BAT
The above JAVA panel closes without saying what to do whenever I click create BAT!

The whole DL of the external limiter is in a folder within the FSX folders at present.

Thanks Colin, but I guess it has to have the same root exactly? I think it might be a 'clever' Windows thing to stop people modifying things on the PC!
If you can e-mail it, I will have a look....
