Installing Mesh

OK here we go with problem number 2!!

I have some Mesh which I used with FS9 I reformatted my hard drive some time ago but never actually got round to re-installing it until now but for some reason I cannot get it into add scenery!!

I made a folder and titled it Europe as it is Mesh for that area (did this before and it worked) went to put the folder into Scenery/World/Scenery location then started FS9. Went to Add Area and got to the folder but when I clicked on it nowt happened, would not go it into the add area, as I clicked on it trhe folder just opened and nothing inside, if you know what I mean.

Do I have to make a folder and call it scenery then put the folder Europe into that and place it into Scenery/World?scenery?

Got to be my age as getting very confused over something that is so simple!!

If any-one can give me a step by step guide as you would for a six year old then I think I might crack it.

Put a scenery folder in your Europe folder and put the mesh files in that. I keep mine in my Addon scenery as I don't like mucking about with the Scenery folder contents.

Are you sure you should have put it into Scenery/World/Scenery? Stuff that lives in there will normally autoload though if it's in a separate folder, maybe it won't. Try putting it into Addon Scenery in it's folder (making sure there is another folder inside that one called Scenery with the mesh files contained therein) and see if that works You'd then have to put it below all your other Europe scenery for it to work.. having activated it first of course.

This suggestion should in no way harm your pc but if it does, you're on your own

Nige.. I saw Simon had posted at the same time but didn't have time to change my post. By all means lob it into where he said as I find something wrong about putting mesh into Addon Scenery. Local mesh is fine but stuff designed to cover such a huge area, I'm not sure about. I won't hurt in there but you would have to move it down the list and it just doesn't feel right

Having read your post again..
Try this..
Make a new folder inside your Europe folder called Scenery and put all the files into that folder. FS always looks for a scenery folder which is why it may not have worked first time you tried So.. Europe folder.. scenery folder inside that and all the files inside that

Hey, this threads' getting better and better the more I read it!!

I think that may be the problem Dave, I did not creat a scenery folder therefore FS would not recognise it. Will give your suggestion a go as from what I can remember the install instructions after downloading the files were to put them in the Scenery/World/Scenery folder but somehow I have mislaid it. If that does not work then it will be back to plan A (Simons' suggestion) If all else fails then..........I will be back!!

I advise against installing MESH in folders that are automatically active. Make a proper folder for them called "Blah Blah Mesh" and inside that folder make a folder called "scenery" and another folder called "texture"...Put your Blah Blah Mesh in the "scenery" folder and leave the "texture" folder empty. Now ACTIVATE it in the usual way in "Scenery Library"...Exit FS9 and then restart it again. Your mesh will now be active and you can go and fly over it to see what it looks like (not all meshes are nice, some are dreadful). If you ever have something that conflicts with it then you can always de-activate the mesh by Unticking it in the Scenery Library and the restarting FS9.

If you had put your mesh straight into something automatic like "Addon Scenery/scenery" then the only way to de-activate it is to go back into Addon Scenery/scenery and delete the Blah Blah Mesh files and by now you will probably have forgotten their names and there is a lot of other stuff in there that should NOT be deleted!

Not necessarily so Peter. You can do exactly the same in Addon Scenery as you describe in Scenery.. if that's what you're saying. I'm not quite sure Basically, what you've advised to do is the same as has already been explained only you've put it into Scenery rather than addon scenery. I don't think anyone advised he just put the files loose into addon scenery or any other auto-active location As it is, putting the folder into the scenery folder is probably less hassle as it sits below whatever else he has active

I remember FSGenesis had to go into a specific location and as you describe, I couldn't find where it was when it came time to remove it

I knew I was doing something wrong but could not for the life of me remember what it was Peter.

I had omitted the texture folder hence the reason why FS did not pick up my scenery folder with the mesh files in it!!??

Tried today using the suggestions made but still could not install them but Dave had mentioned in one of his many posts that:

So taking the bull by the horns I copied all of the files in the Scenery/World/Scenery Folder and put them in a safe place so I could restore them if things went pear shaped. I then literally tossed the mesh files into that folder and started FS9....Lo and behold it worked!! I got mountains that you can call mountains instead of FS hills, flying from Glasgow to Loch Lommond and further north the montain scenery was just like it used to be when I last had it installed.

More than happy with it now so do not see any reason to put thee files into a folder and add them seperately unless of course they should be and placed above the FS Scenery Files in the add area menu.

What you have to do is try what you know and hope that one of them works. I installed a piece of scenery yesterday that said specifically in the readme NOT to put a texture folder in place. Good job I read it as like Peter mentioned, I would've done as a matter of course being the 'done thing' to do It was a sound idea to backup your scenery folder.. one or two.. even a dozen files are reasonably easy to keep track of (if you have any sort of decent memory) but it looks like you had a sack full!

The end justifies the means and you got there in the end which is the important thing
