Post by fighterpilot »

Having just got hold of a 'new' second hand PC i need to reinstall FS9, Its been some time since I last had to install it, so what tweaks and things are essential to get me up and running properly?

Hi Richard :)

The first thing to look for is the 9.1 patch. With that successfully installed, seek out the 9.1 nocd patch which will stop you having to put disc 4 in each time you run. I have the 91nocd 'available' should you have difficulty finding it ;)

Brilliant, thanks for those Dave. I managed to find both the patch and nocd thankfully. Now off to download some of the classics! Or maybe I would if the comp can read cd4 seems to be having some difficulty at the moment.

Hi Richard..

Seems obvious but make sure the nocd patch is for 9.1. There was an earlier version which won't work with the 9.1 patch ;)

Ah.. that's not easy

If you have VFRPhoto Scenery (the original by JustFlight/Getmapping) and the follow up.. VFR Terrain.. bang those on first.. especially if you intend putting UK2000 airports on too. I found the original a swine to patch so if you have GenXv2.. use the FS9 version that comes on those discs as it's already patched and includes VFR Terrain ;) You may still find the odd texture wrong (mine had gaps around Bristol/Cardiff) but those textures are available ;)
As for the rest.. the world is your oyster :cpu:

Hi Dave, I wish I had VFR scenery but haven't got any, if i could find it somewhere at a reasonable price I'll consider getting it. Installing the little UK2000 stuff I have at the moment. I want to build my own retro AI setup for this install so i'll be looking at that soon although getting the player aircraft in first is more important. What I don't want to happen is that the Install becomes a huge sprawling mess like the one on the old comp.

Edit. Well I was trying to install the UK2000 stuff I Downloaded but for some reason I seem to have lost the original installers so tried copying the files from the old version but the setup prog doesn't list the any of the bits I have. Back to square one and a search for the files somewhere.

Edit2. Found them!

Well thats that plan down the drain, the sim runs like a slideshow on the new comp even with all settings minimised and just using the rapide.

Hello Mate..

Rgr that ;) Unless you see the discs cheap as chips, I wouldn't recommend going for the original UKVFRPhoto scenery. It was designed to fit FS2002 and while it works okey doh with FS9.. I've never been sure about the mesh that comes with it and also, the advertised water textures don't work with FS9. As mentioned before, it's a bugger to patch which is something you want to avoid. IF on the other hand, you're a budding FSXer (on your other system).. GenXv2 makes sense as you get up to the minute mesh and superb ground textures for England and Wales PLUS the FS9 version thrown in for free making better use of your dosh. Not sure what the prices are for GenXv2 at the moment but consider it if you use both sims ;)

AI.. the bane of my life recently and the reason I've not flown much this month  Trying to get the era you want isn't as easy as it first seems so you'll have to be flexible. I think I'm as close to '73/'74 as I can be (or can be bothered to be at this point) with only mild incursions from WOAI traffic which was installed primarily to populate overseas destinations like Mallorca, Madrid, Lisbon e t c. What looks fine at one airport looks wrong at others so you'll have to end up with what you can tolerate seeing.

Just done Jersey to Nice in the Herald and was pleased to see Air France 732's parked up so that bit has worked  Good luck with your AI. Be careful you don't get consumed by it while you're not paying attention :worried: :cpu:

Well It looks like FS9 will be staying on the old laptop. I guess this system just cant hack it. I thought it would see a slight performance increase to what I had, but after seeing a few reviews it appears the card (Geforce 8400GS) struggles to work with FS9. Tbh the processor is not exactly bang up to date either, which wont help.
