I don't know why your DVD RW does not show up if it is working. My CD-ROM shows up but the floppy drive (drive A) doe not, even though it works. Strange!

Re: Standby Error
What shows in Device Manager? Control Panel - Performance & Maintenance - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager. The floppy drive should be there and your DVD units in the DVD/CD Rom list (click the + to expand).

Re: Standby Error
In that case, right click the dvd drive that is not working and select Properties and see what it says in the box. If it does not say this device is working properly, you can try the troubleshooting procedure, although sometimes that is not much help.
You could also try to uninstall the device from the right click menu. If everything is ok, Windows should find it again after a reboot (plug and play) and install drivers for it. They probably will be generic windows drivers but they may work just fine. You may want to set a manual system restore point before trying the preceeding remedy.

Re: Standby Error
Gary, I found this article in a newsletter that I subscribe to. How do I get my attached drive to show in Windows Explorer?
It maybe of some help, although the situation addressed applies to a hard disk rather than a DVD drive.
