Temp internet folder is pretty high too....usually

When I use CCleaner it can be around 4-6GB of unused old files and general system cr@p that's removed :-O

I have 2x500gb drives on this system so I'm not that fussed about 800-oddmb sitting there doing nowt but on my first pc which had a massive 220mb WD Caviar drive.. I'd be worried (only about 180mb was useable with FAT!). Thank goodness for drive compression and WinZip! ;)

Hi,

As a regular user of Ccleaner I would recommend it for cleaning all the rubble folders in the XP user profile - Local settings temp, temporary internet, my recent documents. I also use it at work to clean gubbins out of my network account folders that get very full of stuff that slows logins.

I would also advocate regular registry cleaning since every file and shortcut you delete leaves a trace in the registry, which when accumulated can lead to slow bootups & logins. Download a registry cleaner and try it - quite frightening at first. The registry also get cluttered after software installs and updates

I do Ccleaner, full virus scan, registry fix, defrag and backup as a weekly job plus a windows disk cleanup on the main and flightsim drive monthly.. Overkill perhaps but it keeps my machine fit....
Regards,

Degsy

GAry, I think you can limit the size of temporary internet files, at least you can in ie.x. I have mine set at 80mb. Newer files will replace older ones to maintain the limit you set.

I routinely run ccleaner every week. Lots of files in the C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Temp folder can slow the system down especially when booting and may cause other problems. If you have a lot of files there, it can certainly slow down defragging. I know when anyone had problems where I used to work, the first thing the IT guy would do is delete the temp files and reboot.

To get my pennies worth in....I set my browser to bin all the temp internet files when i exit, so it's all nice and fresh for next use. All number of spy and tracking cookies fill this folder and have a nasty tendency to slow the net down, so i often close and re-open my browser and the net speed is back again. I actually created a shortcut on my desktop to the TEMP folder and i clear it out everyday before closing down.....Never had a problem.....................Yet
