Carrier AI

Post by dswanson »

Hi,

With all these Aircraft Carriers about has anybody successfully configured AI aircraft to operate from a carrier ? I have some naval jets doing T n Gs on the Ark Royal from Plymouth but would like to see some doing take-offs and landings on the carrier. :RN:

I use the catapult and wire trap gauges from Rob Barendregt in my flyable naval planes and I wondered if by some trickery they could be automated for AI aircraft. Any ideas ? :help:
Regards,

Degsy

The obvious answer is that Alphasim have done it with their Enterprise package, but that entails an outlay - might be worth it though, as the configs etc could easily be adapted to other AI aircraft.

Hi Andy :hello:

I've never seen AI operating off the Enterprise (though I may not have chosen that option) but I think I did off the Ruskie carrier. Don't have it installed on this pc to be able to check I'm afraid 8) Basically (though it wouldn't be basic for me).. you'd need to make the carrier a proper airfield with taxiways and parking positions. I doubt you'd be able to make them trap and launch off the cats and I'd guess the airfiles would need to be modified sufficiently to make them takeoff and land in very short order. No harm in trying so let us know how you get on ;)

Dave,

The afcad for taxi and parking is less of an issue, the flight dynamics are the real deal.

To get off a carrier you'd need mega max power which Rob Barenregdt's gauges do via an afterburner, but that is switched off after you've left the ground. The FD would have the plane rocketing until it levels off at set altitude. The approach and land would need mega flaps & spoiler, easier to do than the afterburner. A lot of work though !!

Indeed mate but the end result might be worth it ;) From a 'carrier ops' point of view, I'd like to see AI doing ccts e t c from moving AI carriers in FSX.. not a lot to ask I know but would it be cool or what ;)
I've had AI Sea Vixens doing T&G's from Yeovilton to Ark for a while and that is rather pleasing. Seeing them taking off and landing would be more so ;)

I don't think it was native, but a mod published over at the Outhouse; certainly the package had "low poly" ai aircraft with special ai configs, and I know I had it working on my old system - when I'm back up and running I'll revisit this. BTW somebody has just posted over at the Outhouse that the Big E is under consideration for their next batch of freeware releases!
