Thanks for that info, do you have a contact (or link) for where the RAF museums sells plans? I have one or two aerial photos (1945ish) and know the dimensions and hangar info, but am lacking in stuff on the buildings. I will use the VFR photscenery and mask out (with grass) the buildings that have appeared since it shut. That allows a lot of room for adding 'typical' RAF period buildings, albeit without 100% accuracy. Porstmouth Airport is even more of a challenge!!!

Hi Hobby,

I wonder is there something up with Trev's PM's as he never responded to one I sent a while back either... perhaps a full inbox?

Hi Trev,

I email Hendon via the RAF Museum website, asking them if they have a plan of a specific airfield. About three weeks later a plan pops through my letterbox along with an invoice for about six quid. The plans are large, and as Hobby says, contain masses of detail. They can also supply drawings of many of the individual buildings if you can supply the drawing number (you will get this from the plan).

The research department at Hendon is criminally understaffed so they do not like big enquiries so you would probably be best to limit enquiries to one airfield at a time.

Best wishes

There must be something wrtong with Calysos PM box, it is very unusual for forum stalwarts not to reply fairly promptly to PMs.

I have copied over my PM sent on 13th January which now adds to the preceding forum entry.

My PM to calypsos:
"Hi Trev

I have just telephoned the RAF Museum (10:30hrs GMT)for a contact name which they could not give me but the staff suggested that you contact them by email at: "[email protected]"

All enquiries are answered in the order in which they arrive.

My respondent also said that you have the choice of having the drawings sent either folded in an envelope or rolled in a tube and that you should specify your preferred packaging.

The cost will £2.00+VAT! (postage costs were not mentioned so you will have to enquire about that.) That might be the cost per sheet!
Please quote the name of the airfield required together with the drawing number, RAF Ford is 10370/55 and 10371/55.

I was also told that your enquiry will be dealt with by a 'volunteer' which is why no contact name can be given."

Well blow me... it seems I'll be spending a couple of days working in what used to be hanger 3 next month. It's now (in part) a photographic studio.

If I see anything interesting I'll photograph it!

kind regards

Sorry guys, Ben was correct, my PM box was up to 97% and it was not taking any more! :$ :$ :$ :$ :$ :$

Thanks for that info, I will look into this service and pass it on to my friend who is struggling over getting info on RAF Digby. Ford has slipped down the list a bit as I have discovered 'Airfield Focus' books. I have ordered (for collection in the UK) one on Portsmouth Airport, Thurleigh (RAE Bedford),Wisley, Hatfield and RAF Bicester!! They all seem to have good photos and include some plans and are normally only £4.99 each.

Those are an excellent series of books. They usually contain a simplified airfield plan so you might wish to buy the official plans from the RAF museum before commencing scenery building.
