Interesting, there's quite a few advertisements similar to the one you've posted but I hadn't seen that particular one. The sequence of photos that follows - I assume the the stbd drop tank has come off during deceleration and its contents ignited?

Hi Toby..

Looking at the first shot, the SV has already lost it's stbd main gear and landing with it either up or not locked would've put weight on the wingpod snapping it off. The pod is probably where it is due as you say to decelleration or was left there when the airframe moved back on the wire. I don't know the history of that accident so this is all speculation :)

EDIT..
Toby.. I've found a reference for it in one of my books.. quote: Whilst landing aboard HMS Victorious on 8th Feb '61, the starboard undercarriage on Sea Vixen F(AW)Mk1 XJ583 od No.892 Sqn, collapsed. The starboard drop tank burst into flames causing serious damage, necessitating a return to the UK for repair.. unquote ;)

Dave nice one

i thought it might have been gear collapse, but having seen the pictures of a USN hornet landing on deck and a sidewinder flying off the rail, i was wondering if this could have been similar.

either way lucky no one was hurt

Hiya Neil :hello:

No problemo mate ;) Looking at that airframes history, this was the second gear collapse she had suffered.. the first being while embarked in Ark Royal Sep '60 :-O After the incident above, she was transferred to HMS Hermes for transport back to the UK where she was repaired at Lee-On-Solent becoming an instructional airframe. I guess the Navy had had enough of her making a mess on deck
583 eventually went to Arbroath 7/61 and remained there as an instructional airframe until it hit the fire dump in '68. From there to Quarrywood dump, Elgin 3/69 - 7/71.

I am reasonably sure that this was a gear collapse. There is a recorded recovery of a SV with gear malfunction, can't remember exactly what it was, but she was recovered into the barrier.

Hi Sheepherd and welcome to our humble abode ;)

Yup.. as I mentioned above, it was a gear failure.. the second that particular airframe had suffered  Can't find the book I got the reference from (it's disappeared into the mess I used to call the floor in my toyroom) but unsurprisingly, I'm pretty sure it was called 'Sea Vixen'! One day, I'll tidy this place up

Hi Guys, complete Noob here, i came across this website after having these photos you are discussing for 12 years and have stupidly done nothing with them, they look like originals of a crash and we have found the crash info online too, and seen the pictures blown up on posters in Caernaferon air museum in Wales but couldnt find anyone interested in telling us more about the photos

here is the clip from the website about the plane- 08/02/1961 XJ583 V-216 Sea Vixen FAW1 892 NAS A drop tank caught fire after the starboard oleo leg collapsed when landing on HMS Victorious while operating off Malaysia. Returned to the UK on HMS Hermes and was later allocated to Arbroath as A2507- here is the website link http://www.ukserials.com/losses-1961.htm

and here are the photos i have, let me know what you think of them
