nHancer ... yet again!

Post by ajb »

I'm now tearing my hair out with a new graphics card that simply refuses to anti-alias (and most other settings at a guess) under Vista. I have a nice new PC with a nice new GeForce 8800GTS 512 running Vista :-( and FSX. Prior to today I used a GeForce 9800GT which kept hanging the system so I changed. I have tried everything to get FSX to run anti-aliased, alas without any joy. nHancer seems to be completely sidelined! BTW, I haven't ticked DX10 preview. On another drive in the same system I have XP running FS9 and FSX. Guess what, both of those are running perfectly on the new card under XP fully controlled by nHancer.

ARGGHHH!!!!!!! What is it with Vista? :@ :@ :@

Seriously though, any ideas on how to get FSX under Vista to recognise settings within nHancer? I must have done something wrong but I'm blowed if I know what.

Andy, good news you got the 8800 and that it works well in XP and FS9.
I can't help about Vista as I avoid that like the plague, the only advice I can offer is try FSX in XP, or if you want Vista install the Windows 7 beta as it looks to have all the best bits of Vista without the headaches Vista comes with...
The only thing that I can suggest is that make sure your the administrator in Vista and I think you can cancell the "guard" Vista does when you want to change something.. Pile of pooh O/S :@

I am thinking of trying to find a 8800 gtx if I can lay my hands on one, I think the 9800 doesnt do as well??

Hi Tony,

I have to agree with you about Vista. It's probably fine for lightweight use by Joe Public but beyond that - yuch! But I can't stand losing so I'm battling on, at least to get the 8800 anti-aliasing. I think I know what the problem is. Too many iterations of the Nvidia NvApps.xml and nHancer ExtendedProfile.xml from earlier versions, attempts to fix, etc. If I can get back to one for each product I'm hopeful of fixing my problem. I do think that I will ultimately stick with XP for flightsim though.

Good luck on your search for an 8800GTX. It's got to be better than my 9800GT ECO. I thought about that same card but it does need a bucketful of power and cooling so I copped out and went GTS, which is still a big card but sensibly vents its heat through the backplane of the PC unlike the 9800 which warms the interior rather nicely ;-)

Hi Andy I think I will stay with my 8600GTS as its seems fine for now, sadly I upped my spec to a 22" wide screen Acer monitor, (seperate thread)
But at the high resolution it demands FS9 and other stuff starts to struggle :-( Think its back to the 17" 4:3 for me :'(

Am I not right in saying the application profiles in the current versions of the Nvidia driver do exactly the same thing as nhancer? I've tried both (on vista as it happens) and they seem to do exactly the same thing.

I'm not sure about that Ben. TBH I've had to throw the towel in on FSX under Vista as I simply can't get AA to work no matter what I do. With/without nHancer, removing every trace of it, reinstalling drivers and nHancer several times. Maybe the card just doesn't like Vista (well me neither :@ ). So I think I'll stick with XP although frame rates for FSX under XP do seem poorer.

Doh! I don't believe it!! I gave up with Vista and FSX last night after getting nowhere. AA jaggies all over the place :@ So I thought I'll remove FSX from Vista and just live with it under XP and accept the performance hit. This morning I went in to FSX under Vista - probably just to reinforce my resolve to remove it - and guess what, the barsteward thing is working perfectly, AA and all other graphical geatures perfect. I don't understand :o Now I'm terrified to change anything in case it all goes pear-shaped again. I need a drink!

Hi Andy... all very strange indeed. Basically I have the latest Nvidia drivers on Vista. Within the Nvida driver I have the FSX profile selected. Within the sim I have AA switched on. This is with an 8800GTX Ultra (or something like that) It works fine without any need for NHancer. I just hope it stays working for you.

I used to have this problem with FSX and Vista aswell, I found a solution althought I have no idea whether or not it will work for you...

I don't use nHancer so I don't know how similar it is, but in the nVidia control panel under fsx specific settings I set anti aliasing to "enhance application settings". When i told it to override application settings it didnt work for some odd reason...

You can try it anyway, good luck :)
