FSX landclass for Scotland/UK
Is there any landclass upgrade for FSX out there that will improve the look of Scotland and possibly the rest of the UK. I see nothing but trees everywhere and for the Highlands and Islands there just ain't that many trees! Ideally freeware, which I can't find, or failing that, payware. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Re: FSX landclass for Scotland/UK
Hi Folks
If looking to improve landclass -
Although Scotflight's files cover Scotland's entire area,
they do virtually nothing for landclass.
affecting only a few small localized areas, (c/f total).
NB
Area changes are also duplicated through Africa,
appearing in Egypt, Sudan, and Tanzania.
Despite the developer repeatedly being told,
Scotflight Africa is still present in their latest v2 product.
On that basis,
I certainly would not recommend Scotflight to anyone .
You could try the UTX (payware),
or try
Paul Davison's excellent North Scotland landclass (freeware)
which covers entire area northwards of Glasgow-Edinburgh line.

I don't do much flying in Africa (read any) so for me Scotflight is a must have. recently bought the v2 upgrade and I'm very happy with it. Although to be fair, it doesnt do a lot with landclass
Ben.

Me two Ben, however i must say its huge difference to what i do in FSX, especially with regards to RAF Tain, and Cape Wrath... I even got the RAF airfields from the same dev, which i can add, is ment to be fully compatible with V1.2, but infact breaks the causways on the islands around Benbecular.

Hi Folks
Scotflight roads and coastline improvements are currently a "must have".
I then use Paul Davidson's landclass above.
Just wish Scotflight would dump their
fps-hogging FS2000/2002 legacy library objects.
and bring out a genuine FSX version.

Re: FSX landclass for Scotland/UK
Thanks for the quick response guys! I have downloaded and am just about to install the freeware landclass by Paul Davidson. The Scotflight scenery is a must for me as I have the FS9 version - Africa doesn't affect me fortunately. Other than that UTX might be considered in the fullness of time.
Thanks again.,

Installed Paul Davidsons landclass and Scotflight 2.01. Still surrounded by trees 50% of which are deciduous - not so up here! Any ideas of how to reduce the forests? Is UTX the answer?

Andy -
Where specifically are are you seeing the misplaced trees please,
let me know the coords and I'll take a look.
PS
Ensure you've got PD's landclass listed above Scotflight's.
EDIT -
Forgot to say -
Paul orignally created the North Scotland landclass for FS9.
All positioning was derived from OS maps, plus personal knowledge, and photographs.
When displayed in FS9 it accurately reflects IRL, (within FS's 1.2km tile grid limitations).
To improve accuracy, and match IRL datasets,
in FSX, the number designations, (VULCN), of a few landclasses, (Olson class values),
are different from those in FS9.
Certain tile textures were also redesignated to different landclass values.
In FSX, there are 148 VULCNs, 23 being changed and 9 entirely new.
This may result in those tiles displaying an inappropriate landclass in FSX.
ISTR Savannah (Woods), (VULCN 43), being one of the changes,
IIRC, in FS9, Savannah (Woods) covered most of Scotland.
In -
- FS9 this was open grassland with very sparse trees/bushes.
- FSX uprated the tree/bush density in this class.
- FSX introduced an additional Savannah landclass without trees/bushes.
Additionally,
FSX's improved terrain tile resoloution,
and higher autogen density display capabilities,
may further emphasize these FS9/FSX mismatches.
EDIT Again
Andy -
Just noticed you're on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
Yes,
you'll be inundated by trees
as the above Savannah (Woods) info above
is the secondary coverage for the Isle of Lewis.
If that's where you fly,
suggest most strongly you drop the landclass idea entirely,
and save your pennies for a couple of weeks,
Meantime see this link.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for all the info in your reply - I think I understand most of it. The link to earth Simulations forum is most interesting. I will certainly obtain that product when it's available as I start most of my flights from Stornoway and often just fly around the island if I want to check out aircraft. In FS9 the area is well represented if you add the various freeware landclass and terrain upgrades.
