Have you tried something else in the USB slots to check they are actually working?

Re: My mouse won't work with Vista
I'm sure you've tried it, but in case not, I've found that some wireless mice need re synced with their receiver once the PC has been set up and rebooted after updates. There should be small buttons on the bottom of the mouse and on the receiver? Try clicking these buttons at the same time, or do it in the receiver first then on the mouse right after and see if that sorts it. Or, any chance you can try the mouse in another PC in case the mouse is developed a fault (can happen).
Also, make sure your using the right vista driver - 32bit or 64bit version depending on your setup.
best of luck..

Well guys. Tried it in another (XP) machine. No joy.
This helped me to sort the problem.
I put the mouse in the bin.
Went to Tescos and bought a better one with a tiny 'plug&forget' reciever.
Works perfectly. Job done.
Thanks for everyones time. ;-)
