Brian Lecomber lists Austers (all of 'em) amongst his five least favourite aircraft in a current flying mag ..............along with a British biplane of some fame.

The sim Aiglet Trainer is to be based as Leif and Allan have said on G-AMMS, one of the most famous Austers built. Besides being the company's demonstrator at Farnborough in the early 1950s, it was later owned by Comedian and ex RAF Dakota pilot Jimmy Edwards. Most aircraft recognition books of the 50s and 60s have a photo of AMMS within.

Built in 1951 by Auster Aircraft Ltd at Rearsby, it was retained by the company until 1954, being completed as a J5F, then modifed as a J5K (the only such aircraft) and J5L. The airframe was fitted, at various times, with a De Havilland Gipsy Major 1 of 130hp or a Blackburn Cirrus Major 3 of 155hp, and had the Auster Aiglet Trainer’s shortened wingspan (from 36 ft to 32 ft, to increase the aircraft’s roll rate) and strengthened structure to enable aerobatics to be performed. Aiglet Trainers were popular abroad, and the Pakistan Air Force used them in quantity.

G-AMMS is now owned by Mr Richard Webber, and has reverted to being the unique Auster J5K, powered by a 155hp Blackburn Cirrus Major 3, driving a metal Fairey Reed propeller.

I've taken lots and lots of photos of almost every little part of this aeroplane to assist in the flightsim build and as have access to all of the manuals, this will be as accurate as the other Austers that Dave(M) has produced. I, myself have flown in AMMS over 20 times, but never ever gone upside down in her (need some aerobatic refreshing first). Perhaps one day that will happen.

The Auster is definately not one of my least favourite types!!

Strangely enough, Peter, the Aiglet Trainer looks remarkably like any other Auster :o
It features a smaller wingspan (they lopped 4ft off ) and fitted the larger tail surfaces as used on the T7 -floats version - that's about all you'll see.
I'm building it as part of my 'Austers - the Series' project and would have probably put it somewhere back in the queue except Martin (T6flyer) has kindly taken a whole bunch of excellent photos of their example G-AMMS at Eggesford - see Martin's post here.
My information is that the Aiglet Trainer was sold as a fully aerobatic aircraft when flown with no more than two onboard and as a tourer with two more in the back seat.
Reports suggest that it's aerobatic performance left something to be desired :-(

Well thanks for all the information on the Aiglet gents...I will look forward to trying it out back at my base...Of course, I do have a special aerobatic display aeroplane, "Little Bandit" but I will see if I can work up a very small area display in the Aiglet for our "Air Day" :flying:

If you want to get a shift on, there's always the Whitney-Straight or the Hawk Speed Six.

The lack of pace and booming interiors are predominantly Mr Lecomber's dislikes - oh and a tendency to do Skippy impressions if not 3 pointed accurately. Perhaps he needs someone to help out with the FDs?

Maybe next month he'll give us his list of favourites. Bet the Jungmann and Chippie figure highly.

There was me thinking ' I don't need to put much detail underneath - nobody ever sees it' and then some idiot goes and turns my world upside down :o
