It's OK, Dave. You can come down from the ceiling, now  I really didn't mean to suggest that DM's lovely VC10 could use an EO panel :$

In fact all the EO seemed to do was move fuel from one place to another, trim the throttles and chat to stewardesses. You wouldn't want to simulate that. (Well, maybe the last one!) All I meant by a virtual EO was something like a mach lock that you could set when in cruise which emulated that part of the EO's duties so the sim pilot can concentrate on navigation as he would in the real world.

By the time I joined in 1972 the BOAC VC10 was only a three man operation. There weren't any dedicated navigators left then. I suppose the INS had made them redundant.

Ian :)

Yes indeed matey. There was no malice in my banter which I'm sure you understood :cpu: Don't ask me why but I have a feeling that someone, somewhere is making a VC model. He's been quiet for far too long and it's about time a bombshell was dropped on us again

I was on the 'hallowed' site today and I 'felt' something coming through to me. It could've been sod off, the answers no :worried:  Just popped on there to see if anything was new and found those delightful low poly AI models. They're probably not new at all but they were new to me and what a jolly difference they make. You can't see my Brize Norton for C1K's now and I can still move around. What a Bobby Dazzler

It usually easy to tell Dave

Look back and see if there was any statement like it's not going to happen. The stronger the statement the sooner it will happen.

Sod off would be within a few weeks where a simply no might take a year or more.

Of course I can imagine anyone here who would fit this criteria but this is simply a hypothetical case should such a person ever exist

I. AM. NOT. LISTENING. TO. YOU. LALALALA :tunes:

No, those naughty little AI VC10s aren't new. They're the ones I've been using in my retro traffic. And as a reminder, if anybody wants to convert any of DM's other models to AI, he includes a cheeky little batch file in all of them. Don't ask me what it actually does - but the end result is a lower poly version of the real thing that works very well as AI. They're still far more frame rate hungry than Aardvark (for instance) but there's nothing else out there if you want British jetro AI :-(

I know we really shouldn't mention a VC, but DM's fab four is rather like an unfinished symphony. There's just one part missing. It would be shame for a composer to retire before he'd finished his life's work. Wouldn't it? Image

OK - everybody run for cover before DM gets here!

Hi there mon ami

I think you have the wrong end of the stick my friend. The Batch Converter DM includes with all his models simply converts all the textures in a given folder (only ones that are his) to one format.. that is.. if your system can't hack full 32-bit for AI use.. you can convert the lot to a lower degree of detail (say to DXT3) and add or remove mips at the same time. It has nothing at all to do with the 'dedicated' AI model.. it's for textures only. I tried having the likes of LHR cranked up with BOAC VC10's and my system almost stopped  This using the 'FULL' model which is everso smooth and has a much higher poly count than the AI model.. which he'd not made at the time ;-) Brize Norton was equally st..st..stuttery using the full C1K model even with the textures at DXT3. In this instance.. the resolution of the texture plays little part in framerates. It's all to do with the poly count of the model they're stuck to ;-) Now.. my Brize is blissfully full once more and no stutters. In fact, the AI C1K is better all round (detail wise) than the full-blown (and admittedly old) Belfast that visits there occassionally

No more than usual

As you know, Dave, I can become quite 'challenged' when searching for the correct technical terms

The dedicated AI VC10s in the specific download are what I've been using for some months - so I'm OK with that (I think :worried: )

The batch converter thingy is what I had to use to try and reduce the Tridents, 1-11s and Comets. The problem is that there is no AI for those models and I could hardly create Manchester 75 without them. So what I've had to do is to run the batch converter for the liveries that I want to use and so reduce the footprint of the model. I know it doesn't create a dedicated AI model but it does seem to create a slightly less frame rate hungry model that I can use for AI purposes. Does that explain it any better? :$

When he's finished the VC perhaps he'll start on some proper AI models? Image

I tell you what mate.. if DM could write a program that in one click could take a model of 'X' thousand poly's and reduce it with no other input from the end user, he'd make it payware and be a very rich chap. It would be the end to ALL our problems with AI ;-) Know exactly what you mean about the Trident. I'm a bit cheap so use the CalClassic Comet but throw in the 1-11 for good measure and I end up with a Heathrow that is nice to look at but really doesn't move. I thought I'd killed LHR when I added the BOAC timetables but when I added BEA.. that was it.. impossible to either takeoff or land.. FR's at 7 and below  :-(

The AI VC10 was a masterly piece of work and similar poly-cutting measures with the Trident and 1-11 would make a LOT of folk very happy. One day maybe :) If DM ever DOES do these two (and or the Comet too).. will someone PLEASE let me know

Dave

You say adding BEA and BOAC at LHR means no landings and take offs. I don't think that's an AI problem. Remember this is the early seventies.ish so everyone will be on strike
