BT Broadband free I-plate

Post by ianhind »

For those of you with BTBroadband (out of choice or otherwise), there is an offer of a free I-plate with a £1-20 post & packing charge.

http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/c ... ccelerator

This will only be of benefit if you have more than one phone socket AND you connect to broadband via one of the extensions.

Essentially it removes interference caused by the "bell wire" and can improve download speeds by up to 2Mb.

In my case, it made no difference according to www.speedtest.net: 5Mb download speed before and after so my wiring must have been ok. But perhaps worth a try?

Hi Ian..

Tks for that. Unfortunately, my setup is that I only have one box on the line and I only ever use it for broadband (can't remember when I last saw call charges). Also.. my BB is only 2mb anyway so I can't see a 2mb increase in performance  I may go higher one day but at the moment, I CBA.. as the saying goes ;-)
I was offered the next speed up for free but I wasn't sure if my gear would be compatible (it's all BT kit but there was no sign of it on the BT site!!). Emailed BT asking about compatibility and about 4 days later.. got a call from some scouse bird offering me something completely different.. at least I think it was.. I couldn't understand a word she was saying

May work for some though so take it if it's free ;-)

I passed this info to a friend of mine who was getting low speeds on BB.It did make produce some improvement but he was always going to be limited by his distance from the serving exchange.Another factor is that is that some areas are served by cables with aluminium conductors instead of copper which makes a big difference.I think this was a result of extremly high prices for copper many years ago. There was no noticeable detriment to audio transmission but this was long before the advent of t'internet.EricT

I bought the i-Plate a while back before it was free. I'm more than a mile from the exchange and was getting about 2Mb on an 'Up to 8Mb' product. The i-Plate boosted me to 3.7Mb for about a tenner and the improvement has been permanent. It takes a few days to reach maximum speed.

For the sake of a one minute job of replacing the plate on your socket it has to be worth a try!

Ian :)

Tell me about it. BT are the miserable swines who passed our details on to all and sundry as they were the only ones who had my name wrong. Now I'm getting telesales at all hours of the day and night, surprise surprise they say my name exactly as it is on my BT bill.

Just got it free from BT, and fitted it this morning. I've tried the Speedtest a couple of times, and no improvement as yet from the 3.4 Mb I was getting before. Or so the test results tell me...

In reality from the moment I fitted the thing, websites have started coming up in a fraction of the time they did before. It really startled me !
