Royalty free music..?

Guys i am making some new movies and would like to know if anyone has links to free royalty music downloadable off the web so i can add them to my productions...?

Youtube is cracking down hard now...which is totally understandable... :tab:

Yea know what you mean about YouTube, I went to show my Ark Royal video I did a few years ago to a friend and found out that Warner Music Group took a dislike to my use of Rod Stewart...

Good place for royalty free music is:

It lists the music by genres / styles, you do have to sift through a lot of generic sounding stuff, but there are a few gems there, you can also search but using keywords, rousing / classical / military / soundtrack for example.

Thanks for posting that bit of news Tony, I realise that it is an offence but.....if you have already paid for a CD from a store and use one of the tracks from it to put on Youtube or any other site then surely you cannot be breaking any rules as the record company would have been paid royalties from the CD I purchased. :think:

Hi Nigel

The Royalities you pay for cover private entertainment not public performance and there is usually a limit to how many people you can play it to at one time. Technically if you played it at a party you could be breaking the law but I doubt they would be bothered

To put it up on You Tube would be the same as playing it on say Radio 1 and they have to pay royalties as it is a public broadcast.

You are in effect only buying the right for you and a few others with you to listen to it...it never becomes your property to use as you please.

Legally no as you haven't paid for the rights to broadcast it, you're effectively in a similar situation to a radio station which has to pay royalties every time they broadcast a record or someone playing music in a public venue who needs to pay for a license which then compensates the original performer/record label.

However if you search youtube for WMG there are a couple of videos that explain how to add a 'fair use' disclaimer that allows you to use music where no profit etc. is expected.

This site.... http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/ ...has royalty free music with the suggestion that if you use a piece of music you make a small donation to the site. It appears all the stuff is either out of copyright (due to the age of the piece and the composer being dead) or it is written by the site owner and he has waived commercial rights for the most part. I had a listen to quite a few tracks and there is some good stuff on there in all sorts of styles and lengths.
