Rick might be referring to RivaTuner - just had a look and it left me

Also just had a play with nTune, the Nvidia tool. It seems to allow me to change the fan speed for "when running in 3D".

So I upped it to 100% and GPU-Z says it went to 100% but there was no change in noise level. Then back to minimum which GPU-Z says is 30%. But the monitor in nTune showed no change in speed - so I'm not sure what GPU-Z is measuring!

Is that GPU fan really going around at all?

Ian

Edit GPU-Z does agree with nTune for temperature!

I dunno Ian. Something was running at 50-odd percent but it's obvious that 50-odd percent was nowhere near enough. Next time I turn it on.. I'll take a screenie of what GPUZ is reporting ;-)

Dave

What I meant was that GPU-Z might be reporting what the system thinks the fan speed should be - as in my experiment.

Is the fan really going round at all, ie as in Mk1 eyeball test.

If all else fails, I've got a 256Mb AGP Nvidia 7600GS that is surplus to requirements ;-) . But apparently not as good as its older brother the 6800GT. :-(

Hello Mate..

I've not done a visual test. I was presuming that GPU-Z was reporting what was happening rather than what should be happening. Work has stopped play for now but I'll have a gander inside again this evening ;-)

Yup.. numbering conventions on the nvidias can be a bit of a nightmare.. more so now as I see they've gone to 3 numbers  The 8's (5800, 6800, 7800) always used to be the pick of the bunch so going up on a first number but down on a second usually meant no overall increase.. as I've understood it :) Appreciate the offer of the 7600 though. Should all go downhill.. I may take you up on it ;-)

When i had problems with excessive heat Dave i found the GPU when checked was the idle fan speed and there is another program out there somewhere that puts the GPU under load... :cpu:

Then you can see the temps of loading and what the fan on the GPU is doing...also works with the CPU...i'll have a nose around mate... :)

Righty ho chaps

I've had the 6800 out and taken the cover off the GPU. It's an interesting design :o  A lovely 'fine' heatsink surrounded by a larger, beefier heatsink exiting by the familiar round fan. Unfortunately, the design causes an effective 'choke point' for all the worlds rubbish at the fan end of the heatsink and yes.. the choke point on this particular bit of hardware was well and truely choked!

However.. all may not be as bad as I thought. The fan vanes and heatsinks have been brushed clean (natural hair brush don't ya know) and the whole lot put back together and reinstalled. Here is what GPU-Z now reports..

Image

Looking at this again, I see that it's NOT the GPU that's running at 97deg.. it's a more sedate 58deg. All those other bits on the bottom are reporting 97 and I have no idea what they are! Is it dead yet.. I don't think so

Dave,

For a top fun time cleaning your computer out I can thoroughly recommend compressed air, you can pick it up from PC World (about the only thing I actually buy from there). Basically put the nozzle against one end of the heatsink/fan combo and press the button, at which point the world's supply of c**p comes flying out the other end. After the first time you tend not to look at the exit point at the same time you press the button.
The bonus is you don't have to take things apart, just open the lid on the case and spray away at anything that looks like a dust trap, i.e. the whole thing!

Hello Mate

Believe it or not.. that was the last thing I bought from there and I ran out a couple of years ago

There is a word of caution using compressed air. DO NOT USE IT ON YOUR CAMERA (that's lots of words innit!) I'd tried a number of times to get rid of a bit of FOD and when it didn't move.. out came the little can of compressed air. I KNEW when I reached for it that what I was about to do would probably end in tears and it did. ALL the cr@p moved from one end of the camera to the other and up into the viewfinder :o :brick: :doho: Ah.. those London smogs of yesteryear are still with us and you don't even have to be in London :)
