FS Multi screen

Post by Chris558 »

Just wondering what the current situation is for using multi screens for FS. I remember reading about it in PC Pilot where, I think, there was no need for different drivers. Can anyone advise what to go for?

Hi Chris..

It all depends on your setup and which sim you're using mate. You certainly don't need 'different' drivers for FS9 which will happily display whatever you want.. depending on your setup. FSX doesn't care for fullscreen with multiple monitors.. not a great deal can be done about this as it's 'built-in' to the sim. There are a number of ways to skin a cat. You need to look at what you have and what you want to see ;-)

come on Tony

you ran FSX for about 5 minutes (if that)!
and my FSX runs 2 monitors full screen with no problems.

FS9 is crap after flying FSX for nearly 2 years. (FSNavigator was the only legitimate reason i kept FS9 for a while).

Sounds to me like you didn't get to installing SP2 into FSX

I agree with Rick, FSX on two screens isn't a problem. In fullscreen one monitor displays the cockpit and you can drag all your pop-up gauges, ATC window etc. to the other one and the same in windowed mode, you just have to undock the pop ups. I've also had the cockpit view spanning both monitors by changing the multi-monitor mode to horizontal span, you can get some nice panoramic screen shots that way.

OK.. I'll qualify the FSX statement. You cannot (at least I can't) run a second program (ie FSCommander) on a second monitor with FSX fullscreen.. it has to be windowed. However, you CAN drag and drop other windows onto a second monitor as already mentioned. Problem here is that ideally, your monitors have to be the same res. As I said upstairs.. it depends on what you want to see and what your setup is. As it happens.. FSX runs faster on my rig in windowed mode than fullscreen :o :dunno:

It has to be admitted that FSX DID lose some multi-monitor functionality.. it was neither a step up or a like for like over FS9 ;-)

Hi Folks

Dave -
Here's a workaround for you,
and those pesky non-in-process addons.

Before starting FSX -

Right-click desktop,
properties,
click 2nd monitor,
untick "extend desktop to second monitor".

Start FSX
FSX in windowed mode
Minimise FSX

Start FSC

Renable extended desktop
Drag FSC onto second monitor.

Restore FSX
Alt-Enter FSX into fullscreen mode.

Hi Paul..

Thanks for that.. easy innit.. and all very well documented  No such fiasco with FS9!

Rick.. FSCommander is a nav program.. one of the few I know of that work (after farting about as above) with FSX. However, if you can imagine having teeth pulled without anaesthetic, that's how much fun it is to use. There ARE benefits though.. it works with both FS9 and FSX so if you don't have a nav prog and run both sims.. it's a 'one shot' fix ;-) I've only used it once in anger.. on the CBFS Rhur Valley MP flight from Scampton using FSX. I think you may well have been a postie on nights at the time

Hi Guys,

What I would like is a central screen for the cockpit/straight ahead view and one on each side for diagonal side view (or 90 degree side view) So is it simply a case of plugging in two more monitors, and altering the settings in FS?
