Web Hosting
Can anybody suggest a reliable, basic web hosting service? I get a small amount of server space from my ISP which I use for hosting my website of my Dad's war memoirs and some pictures (including the screenshots I post here). But the space and file size is limited so I often have to have a clear-out. The address is also quite complicated.
What I'd like is space to support a second website at a later date and the ability to post files and videos which could be freely downloaded. And of course a domain name and a few associated email addresses.
Anybody got any advice they can give me, please?

I can't recommend a web hosting company (but would be interested to hear of other's experiences since I too am considering more space) but the domain name and addresses are available from many places. I used www.123-reg.co.uk to register my wife's domains.
And then you don't have to live with "the address is also quite complicated".
I have referenced the long address of "http://www.btinternet.com/~calypsomedia/calypsoart/" to be simply "www.calypsoart.co.uk" via the 123-reg control panel.
So basically you can choose your web hosting and domain name suppliers separately.
Now waiting to hear about web hosting suggestions.

Re: Web Hosting
We've been with webfussion for... must be 4 years now and never had a problem, although we are using a VPS rather than standard shared hosting. I use a wee firm called idaq (www.idaq.com) for my own hosting and email. Again, used them for about 5 years now and never had a problem.
Ben.

Re: Web Hosting
Thanks very much for the recommendations. They all look very good. But they're also bewildering because they offer so many different services and options and frankly I can only understand about 2% of what they're talking about
I haven't got the spare time at the moment to learn what it all means. I want a simple all-inclusive package.
My biggest fear is that I might sign up to one that insists on using their own web design facility. I've already created my own website and service it by using Core FTP lite. Will all these hosting companies allow me to use that program to upload my own website or will I have to use their own programs?

Re: Web Hosting
From what I can gather, all of those shown look like straight forward webhosting to me. As long as you have FTP access to the site, you can upload your own designs without problem. ;-)
So, probably a better why of doing this is to tell us what your after... eg...
Webspace in GB
Bandwidth per month (i.e. how much data will be download or uploaded to the site over a typical month)
domain name (do you already have one)
email address (again, do you already have one, how many mailboxes do you need etc)
Then we can point you at more specific pages

Re: Web Hosting
Hi Ben. It would only be for personal use so a starter package should be enough. I don't think the website gets a lot of traffic (despite it being one of the best of its kind
). I'd like to put some picture galleries up so that family and friends can access them and also make files available for download rather than emailing them as attachments. Probably a maximum of 20Gb downloaded in a month.
I'd want a personal domain name with 5-10 associated POP email addresses (e.g. [email protected]). I should think 20Gb of space would be more than enough.

Re: Web Hosting
20GB!!!!! :o
To give you an idea, we use about 8 a month
With regards Galleries etc, have you got this already coded into your own website? Or is this something you want the hosting package to provide?

Re: Web Hosting

I think you're going to have to stop asking me questions, Ben

The service that Peter uses seems to have the least bewildering array of options, so I'm tempted to use that! But now I've got a bigger problem - finding a domain name that's suitable for both a WW2 memoirs website and an email address for me
