SNAFU..........got no idea

Post by Seaking »

I'm no slouch in the pc world but this latest issue has got me stumped

Sunday am sat down to start my normal cleaning, went to defrag.......won't work, tried my ulitmate defrag.....won't work
tried windows degrag.......can't start......I sit thinking what the hell is going on !! it was 5.45am and the clock was reading 7.29am
rebooted and clock was fine again and has been since.

Start looking into it, something to do with services not being started correctly, read everything I can on it and try all sorts of
weird and wonderful scenarios..still not fixed. Went into computer management and find that my two drives are not even there
only the optical cdrom drive........like what's going on ?????

In my computer I see all the drives no problem, internet is fine, puter is running like a swiss clock no problems. Temps are all
good even at my oclock.

Had words with my local store gurus the don't seem to know what's going on either, I shudder to think a format is needed but
if that's the case so be it. Thought I would try here and see if anyone has experienced the same issue.

The first thing I would try is to get Computer Management to recognize all your drives. If a service was not started on boot and you have checked the Services applet to see if it is set to start automatically, then I imagine it is because the operating system could not find the drive that the service is located on. If Computer Management does now show all of your drives, I don't know what is going on either!

BTW, what OS?

Run a decent scan for viruses/trojans/malware/adware. There are a couple of nasties roaming about at the moment that tinker with your disk management settings and can prevent you drafragging and various other things.

Sorry if you've already tried this but have you tried booting into safe mode and defragging there?

Hi Chris, I've tried everything I know still same issue. Puter running just fine no problems, fsx working like silk. Device manager shows
both my drives working correctly.
I know this is something to do with a service called MS DTC it's in manual but I can't seem to start it an error comes up so what's changed it
I have no idea.
They guys in my local store have said they will gladly take a look with me. I'm slouch when it comes to puter probs but this one has me
stumped so far. I really hate the thought reformatting lol, XP is ok to load, it's all other stuff.

I'll keep pluggin away at it.

Its get better now, think I just picked up "something" from the net while searching for an answer
now I have no Kapersky and it won't let me use malware. Tried in safe mode /....nogo.......oh my
I've picked up a doozy here methinks..........what a pain in the butt !!

The progs I have installed for protection isn't funny, about 8 of them and still something gets through.

Looks like a loooooooooooong weekend coming up with a full format of both drives......all that pain with
fsx install again lol. although this time I have the fsx.cfg already backed up on dvd.

I'll keep ya posted.

Seaking - I don't know if it is a coincedence or not, but my Kapersky was switched off this morning when I booted up the laptop.

I switched it back on and carried out a scan, all seems OK. The laptop has been running slow for two or three days though.

Good luck with the format etc.

An update, sorry should have posted earlier. Was just thinking of formatting when a thought came to me........mmmmm lets try Kapersky.

Couldn't have made a better decision !! found a forum on their website devoted to viruses, within 40 mins these gurus had me all repaired, if
anyone has an issue and runs Kapersky I strongly suggest you visit http://forum.kaspersky.com

They had me download a few neat tools and gave me custom scripts to run, not only did they get rid of the files buried deep in the cat root
folders, I was able to run anti malware progs again, was able to see all my drives, defrag came back, I was amazed at the support that was
given in a short period of time.

Now I know where to go should I ever get a "beast" like this again. Nice to know there are still good people out there.......my guy was Lucian from
Romania one of the moderators........when I think of the previous two issues like this and I sat on the puter for days resolving lol.....well there ya go
guys.

John, you may want to get that checked out, puter running slow and kapersky not starting on boot. Could be
something amiss...........just an opinion. Head on over to the link I posted and see what the gurus say.
