Thanks for that tip, Rich. I've been lucky enough to have spent time in small trekking camps, sleeping under canvas and tracking the big five on foot. I once impressed a ranger at a luxury camp with my tracking experience by identifying cheetah spoor and estimating its age - but water safaris you can keep! I ain't that brave! Hippos and crocs I want nothing to do with, thank you!

South African game parks are the only part of the world I miss. They are so close to our evolutionary origins and if you're looking for the meaning of life - this is where you'll find it. Laurens van der Post said in his autobiography that everybody needed to be charged by a white rhino. I thought I knew what he meant until one day it happened to me and then I realised how insignificant and irrelevant I was, compared to nature. I seriously considered training to become a game ranger when I retired from BA after my second divorce. It was only the surprise emergence of the third Mrs Speedbird and cyberbrat that put paid to that idea! Probably just as well considering my aversion to hippos
