Sorry to hear about the lay-offs folks, hope you find new positions soon :-(
This week my employers, a large UK retail outfit, gave us 90 days notice of change of terms and conditions. Basically this means that our present employee contracts are torn up, we are 'laid off' and re-instated under the new terms and as from May 25th (my son's birthday  )we do as they say or get escorted to the door.
But at least by screwing the workers the shareholders hang on to their premium...... :@

Re: Sad Announcement.
I'll sadly be in the same position in two months time. Been with the same people for some 24 years and have decided that the best option will be to leave and look for something else. If I stay, it wont be the same and I think that those staying behind will be following me in a few months time. I've only known this job for all my working time, so perhaps my true vocation in life, is still awaiting me!
Best wishes to all,
Martin

Thanks Pete,
The union is on the case but the last few meetings with the company haven't been very productive...also the 90 day notice clause was added to our previous contract and it's been assumed for a while that they would use it as they've been hinting at 'more flexible working' since last year.

I too was made surplus to requirements. Luckily I got the chance to apply for my dream job as a firefighter, I'm through the first stage so fingers crossed for that.
Sorry to hear about the rest of you guys, good luck.

Sorry to hear that and it is a sign of the times. I don't think anybody is safe at the moment. I also think some less scrupulous employers are turning the screws using the threat of redundancies to get what they want.
I work for a well established charity and even they are talking of redundancies and no wage rises next year. That is despite agreeing a three year wage deal.
Times are hard and they are going to get harder.
