Full Motion 6-Axis Simulators on South Coast

Post by Mike Potten »

Hi, I've just visited Davit Maltby's site after a long absence which, in between, I have spent many a happy hour flying his wonderful work i.e. the Trident, the BAC 1-11 and who could forget the dear old Comet and it struck me that I would like to thank him personally but don't know how to contact him.

I am fortunate enough to be able to provide sessions in full motion 6-Axis simulators on the South Coast, the options being B747-200, B727-276, B737-200 and we even have an ex BA BAC 1-11, which is very basic but ETPS and RAE still pop along to push buttons and turn knobs every now and again before going back to that heaven they inhabit at Boscombe Down.

Anyway, I don't know where David lives but if ever down this way I would love to extend an offer to 'come fly with me' as a token of my appreciation for all the pleasure he has provided both myself and all us flight simmers over the years...... So if your reading this David sent me PM and perhaps we can arrange something or if somebody knows how to draw his attention to this post please do so.

Also though, I am able to offer substantially discounted rates for all Flight Sim enthusiasts as I am qualified to instruct on them all, so just need to rent the box for the duration. I just cover my travel costs, not in it to make money I just love doing it these days and the Airline appreciate the additional income at weekends when it isn't busy.

I find all types coming for the experience, some have never flown anything at all ever and know nothing but have a natural flare (or I'm a good instructor I suppose, but self praise is no praise as they say) and there are those that couldnt hit the runway if all 3 AP's engaged on Autoland, but I've never had a disapointed customer yet always find some way to excite them. When I get a FS Enthusiast though I know I'm in for some enjoyable mutual flying! Always fun, especially on a CAT3 Auto in the 742!

These are all 'Classic' Ladies, so the only fly-by-wire you'll find is the cables in between the controls and lot of switches, buttons and yes, good old clock gauges, the only IT screens being in the sadists panel!

So, if anybody is genuinely interested drop me an email to [email protected]

PS: All sims can take 3-4 people at a time if people want to share costs.

David Maltby is a member & posts here, so its only a matter of time till you get a response from the man himself.

Sounds like you have a fine set-up there. Pity you are a good 200 + miles away. There can't be many 1-11 simulators still active, so long may it be so.

Bob

Oh....and welcome too CHEERS
I can fly now with my fantastic new PC

Thanks for that Bob, as you say, shame about the 200 miles!

Think its fair to say DM is a bit more than a member  Founding member at least. ;-)

Hi Mike, and welcome aboard. DM's stuff is very good indeed isn't it :)

HI Mike and welcome to our humble abode.

Always wanted to fly a simulator to appreciate the real handling qualities of the big 'uns but never had the chance or been in an area where I could.

If it is Bournmouth that you are located then there may be a very good chance that sometime in the near future I will be venturing down that way and would love the opportuntiy to fly the..........Einee...Meenie....Minie....Oh, I just don't know!! :$

Hope to read some of your interesting accounts of simulator flying.

Regards
Nigel.

Hi Mike

That sounds like an offer nobody could refuse, thanks. And thanks for the kind words.
I'm in South Staffordshire, so quite a way to go, but if I could syncronize it with taking the wife on a short break that would be great.
We've been meaning to visit the south coast for a while now. I'll teach her to fly before we arrive!

Thanks very much
David

I managed to get a few goes on the 1-11 sim when it was at Cranebank. We used it at BIA and at Mediterranean Express. Pretty basic compared to the modern sims, night-only visuals if I recall but a nice piece of kit.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and David has made contact. As for my being a member getting you guys discount it's guaranteed i.e. I used to do the Flight Sim experiences as part of a business I was running and so had to make a profit and cover overheads of course. I no longer run the business and I do it for love, I get to hire the boxes at a very discounted price, I throw my time in for free as I love it and I add on a mere £20 for me to cover my petrol there and back. So, on the B747 for example I am able to offer prices over a £100 p/hr less than I used to have to charge when doing it as a business. So, you won't find a better deal around I can assure you. I consider it a priviledge to be able to do it these days and I'm just as happy watching other people fly or instructing as flying myself. So if anybody is going to on the South Coast at any stage and you are genuinely interested drop me a note.

Happy Landings and 'may your Dunlops always dangle'!
