HDD single boot partitioning

Hi all.
I have purchased a second internal HDD drive,i know how to install it physically,by putting the jumper in slave,the bit i am not clued up on,is how do i partition it,for a single boot XP system,so i can have my operating system on the original HDD,and FS9 & GMAX on the new HDD,to give me more memory.
I have also read in a mag,that XP does not have a means to partition an HDD,and that you need to use a third party programe,any advice on both questions would be greatfully received.

Not sure why you want to partition it, if you plug it in it will appear as the next logical drive letter that's available e.g. if your current drive is C: and you've got a DVD drive as D: it'll appear as E: When you install stuff change the path from C:\Whatever to E:\Whatever. Windows and anything else on there will stay on your original drive and work as per usual.
You may need to go Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management and then use the Storage\Disk Management bit to assign a drive letter to the drive initially, I've had to do that on one machine when I added a second drive, but for some reason on another machine which has about four drives in it everything just worked out of the box?!?

Hi Skippy Bing.
I thought it had to be partitioned in order for it to work,the mag i was reading was refering to a dual boot system,and the computer shop where i bought the HDD from,made it sound as if i had to do the partitioning thing,thats why i was asking for advice.
If i only have to put it as a slave,and then use it,then all the better,thanks for info.

It's possible that the new hard drive needs to be formated.
If so, follow the path suggested by Skippybing, i.e. Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management-> Disc Management.
This should show you your drives. Right click on the new drive, and select 'Format'. This may take some time, but should result in a useable second drive.

Perhaps they thought you wanted partitions or a duel boot system and were saying you would have to that yourself. As SkippyBing has indicated, you certainly don't have to do it.

If you did want to partition it after formatting (make sure you format in NFTS and not FAT32), you can use WindowsXP to do your partitioning...No need for any other software. You will find in HELP somewhere under Partitioning

Hi All.
Thankyou gents for your help,i have the new drive fitted and formatted in NTFS,this was the only option it gave me anyway.
I had to take my original HDD out,and change the jumpers,as it was not set as master,but i found it was set up as CS,which i believe is cable select.
New drive set as slave,all i have to do now,is transfer my flightsim files to the new drive,and also the gmax files,then i might get a better response from this prgrame,and start to learn how to use it.

P.S. i might even try the base FSX,to see if it runs ok on my machine.
