You know.. this internet lark is complete rubbish. You type in the window.. Hurn Airport 1946 Southern side of the runway and you get offered a hotel room

I'd not thought about the Daks to be honest but looking at the registrations of the 2 above the freighter.. they could well be AGKF and AGKJ.. both of which were C-47's (Dakota 4) and on the books of BOAC at the same time as the Lancastrians. Wonder if Pete has this in HighRes?? Perhaps he could confirm the registrations ;-)
The furtherst Lancastrian looks like AGMB.. 'Norwich' delivered 18.6.45.. crashed Singapore 27.8.48 More interesting is the closest one which I believe is AGLU (having just checked the BOAC list.. they only had one Lanc with a reg ending in U so it must be AGLU). This aircraft is ex VD253.. delivered 5.4.45.. damaged beyond repair at Hurn 15.8.46. Now.. whether it is already dbr (though it doesn't look it) and parked off the line of the other aircraft OR.. if it's still in service, it dates the shot between 5.4.45 and 15.8.46

AGNF is also a BOAC aircraft.. c/n 15534, Dakota4.. Sold to Union of Burma Airways as XY-ACM (sorry.. no date for the sale) ;-)

It does seem to be leaning toward Hurn doesn't it though I can't for the life of me find a 'period' shot of the airfield to confirm the layout :brick:

EDIT.. opens eyes.. you can clearly see the Speedbird logo's on the noses on the blowups D'oh.. should've gone to Specsavers

My first thought (nobody else seems to thought of it), was early Berlin Airlift grouping. However, I think things seem to moved on with dates etc. Anybody said White Waltham?

I know I'm not a local, and I have no info on developent of Hurn.... but in the 3rd of Petes blow up shots there is a row of what looks like substancial houses. To my mind that looks very residential and a quick look at the current aerial photos shows nothing even remotely residential anywhere nearby.
White Waltham on the other hand looks spot on. From the shape and style of the houses etc.

What do you think chaps?

Thanks for muddying the water If you note my previous post re Lancastrians.. AGLU (in particular) was damaged beyond repair at Hurn in '46. The Berlin Airlift didn't start until June 24 '48 so it's definately not an early grouping for that.

Heston.. well.. the Lancastrians weren't based there and shouldn't have been there as far as I can tell :think: Although one of the 4 'London' airports.. it was only operational between '29 and '46 so this would also put it as a possible location in doubt.. I think
