D. Maltby/Rick Piper

Just wanted to comment on the excellent aircraft that D. Maltby & Rick Piper have done.
I find the Viscount & the VC-10 to be a nice change from the usual homegrown stuff.

I have a question for D Maltby or anybody else who knows more about the VC-10.

Did the VC-10 acually have the capability for autoland back then or was this added on by D Maltby
as a "luxury item"

Either way I haven't made a manual landing yet since I recently downloaded the aircraft!!

Can't do that with the 707 or DC-8!

The VC 10 had autoland but I don't think it was used much. It wasn't as sucessful as the Trident

Rest assured anything on those models was on the real aircraft or it would not be there

Those magnetic indicators below the HSI are news to me and must be a relatively recent mod.

Looks like three or four of them; the rightmost appears to be for RMI input, wonder what the others are?

I remember seeing that shot years ago and finding it funny. I think the aircraft was in the U.S. at the time and while I don't think Tonks was responsible for the 'mod' he definately took the picture ;-)

The HSI is a military version and differs quite a bit from it's civvie couterpart. I presume you're refering to the two red indicators to the right and left. The left shows GS and the right shows NAV. There are a couple more not visible.. bottom left, an orange flag with two black lines indicates 'Fail' and bottom RH.. a white flag bearing D.G., visible if the HSI is working off the DG ;-)

Sri Fraser.. re-read your post. Those MI's indicate Flt Director Mode.. (three of em.. the 4th is RMI). Not all versions of the VC10 tankers have these exact same bits ;-)

The VC10 did have autoland but while it was completely developed and functional it turned out to be too expensive to keep in running trim. This was partly due to the fact that on the long haul routes the aircraft didn't have to use the feature very often. The Tridents that BEA flew had to use it on an almost daily basis on the other hand as they operated around Europe in all the lovely weather of that part of the world.

Aye. The flight director on the C1K and the Ks are quite different, as are the cockpit indications (on the C1K the co-pilot doesn't even have a switch to play with). These MIs are those on a (long lost) K4 (as the reg shows!).
